Can you telnet into the server? Do you have anti-virus software on the
machine? If so, how is it configured? If you turn it off and try again, does
    it now work?

I too am having this problem.

    Here is the scenario:
3 physical node, 2 virtual server Exchange 2003 SP2 cluster.
4GB of RAM using the /3GB and /USERVA=3030 switches each.
Dell Poweredge Server swith 4 dual core hyperthreaded CPUs (yes it
looks like there are 16 to Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise edition).
    The cluster runs fine normally.
Antigen is installed for Exchange scanning, and Symantec is installed
on the file system with all the proper file/folder exclusions for
    Exchange.

We installed XOSoft WanSyncHA for Exchange which replicates the
database to a remote site Exchange system. When we first intialized
replication, the HTTP virtual server would die with the error above,
and no other errors are logged. This would cause the cluster to fail
over, so I quickly changed the settings on the HTTP virtual server to
not cause the cluster to fail over upon failure (temporarily).
I think failed the 2 servers, one at a time, to the stand by physical
node until all the physical nodes had been rebooted. We then resumed
replication and the system was fine for almost a week.
Then the dreaded HTTP virtual server death returned any time we
    initialized replication.

There are no other errors being logged. Nothing else in the cluster
has changed (like the IP or anything like that).
It seems to me that the WanSyncHA is placing a load on the system, or
causing some sort memory contention/exhaustion, that is causing the
HTTP Virtual Server to die. XOSoft claims they have not seen this
before (don't they all say that) and so we get no where with them.
Aside from debugging the HTTP service, does anyone have any
recommendations on how to deal with this?
Is it perhaps the cluster service freaking out because of a delayed
response from the HTTP service and causing it to terminate
    unecessarily?

    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Dan Sheehan

I assume you are using XOSoft to replicate your MSCS cluster to a
remote site for disaster recovery? If so, I suggest you remove XOSoft
and see if the problem still exists. If that fixes the problem, then
put XOSoft back on the systems and see if it breaks it again. If it
does, I would demand that XOSoft works with you to find a resolution
or look elsewhere for your DR solution.

If you still have the problem without XOSoft in the mix, open a case
    with Microsoft.

I think we are addressing this from the wrong angle.

When I initiate a replication from the source server to the target
server, the HTTP Virtual Sever Cluster resource reports the error
above and dies. This HTTP Virtual Server ONLY dies if I initiate
replication. So it is directly tied into the replication.
It so happens I am using XOSoft to perform the replicaiton, but please
do not get hung up on that particular product as I don't think it is
doing anything more than a block file copy from Server A to Server B.

Please approach this problem from the aspect of why would the Cluster
service report ""The IsAlive check for this resource failed." for the
    Exchange HTTP Virtual Server Instance?
It seems as if the replication is consuming some vital resource that
either the HTTP Virtual Server or the Cluster service is using/wants
    to use.
Has anyone run into a memory configuration issue on an Exchange
cluster where a particular application has caused Cluster resources to
be considered non-responsive and therefore failed?

I am trying to get my customer and XOSoft to talk to each other,
however I wanted to simultaneously approach this from a server
configuration side and ask the clustering experts if any of this rings
a bell with a lack of free PTEs or anything like that.

    Thanks!

Collect some performance data with and without replication enabled.
Pay particular attention to Kernel Memory issues as described here...

    http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/20...28/416551.aspx

Does that server use the /3GB switch? If so, you might want to try it
without the switch to give you more available kernel memory.

We are in the process of trying to schedule a resource comparison
because starting the replication knocks the HTTP virtual server
offline so it has to be planned.

And as mentioned in my first post, the servers are using /3GB. I am
hesitant to recommend to the customer to try turning this off on a
production server, therefore reducing the available memory cache to
Exchange 2003, just to see if it helps (note the reboot seems to buy
us about a week before the issue returns, so this would be hard to
    measure anyway).

Anyone else run into similar resource contention issues with an
    Exchange cluster?

Any update on this? Have you identified the issue?

I was able to analyze a perfmon capture of every 10 minutes that
covered the time period of when the HTTP virtual server was once again
marked offline. The failure occured on 6/21/07 ~11:30pm.
So I narrowed the scope down in the permon debug from 6:30PM on
    6/21/07 to 1:20AM on 6/22/07.
The Free System Page Table Entries never drop below 8400. Here is the
    MSFT criteria for Exchange:
-Warning" when the Free System Page Table Entries is less than 8000
-Critical" when the Free System Page Table Entries is less than 5,000

The Paged Pool Bytes were ~92meg the entire time period. Here is the
    MSFT criteria for Exchange:
-Warning" when the Pool Paged Bytes counter exceeds 200 MB
-Critical" when the Pool Paged Bytes counter exceeds 220 MB

The Nonpaged Pool Bytes reached up to 107meg, with the average of
99meg. Here is the MSFT criteria for Exchange:
-Warning" when the Pool Nonpaged Bytes counter exceeds 100 MB
-Critical" when the Pool Nonpaged Bytes counter exceeds 110 MB

It also appears for a period time during the replication the system is
potentially paging harder (~350/sec) than after the failure (~25/sec).
After 11:45pm that night the Free System PTEs jump up around 9500, the
pool page bytes drop to about ~90meg, and the nonpage pool byes is
    ~77meg.

So I don't see anything that causes me to believe the system ran out
of the vital memory resources. The only one that got close was the
Nonpaged Pool Bytes, but it did not cross the "critical" threshold.

Any other suggestions of what to look for in regards to why the
cluster server might think the HTTP virtual server is "offline"?
