Print Server Migration printmig.exe issues

Hello there,

It's my first post there, hope I am not off subject... .)

I am trying to migrate a win2003 print server to a brand new win2003 server R2 X64 (emt64) server.
I ran printmig on old servers, no warnings.

Restore is also done with no warnings...but I have only 3 printers back. I have reinstalled print monitors ( HP Standard Tcpip port) prior to restor process.

Nevertheless I have noticed I have eight print processors running on old server and 0 running on new one.

Questions:

-Does Jump from win2003 server to win2003R2 X64 (intel Xeon) can create trouble?.

-Do you have to install manually print processors ?. How ? from driver manufacturer (then printmig is not so great).

-Do I need to have HP jetadmin installed. ?

Thanks in advance for your support.

RE: Print Server Migration printmig.exe issues

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

Because we can not use 32 bit print drivers on a 64 bit OS, this process
will fail. We will have to reinstall the printers using 64 bit drivers and
add additional drivers for 32 bit. This is by design.

Thanks & Regards,

Re: Print Server Migration printmig.exe issues

Hello,

You are right. We need to add the 32-bit print driver remotely on to the
64-bit print server, follow these steps:
1.On any one of the clients machine running 32-bit OS.
2.Access the print server \\PrintserverName\Printers.
3.Open the printer required to add the 32-bit driver.
4.Go to properties.
5.Sharing Tab.
6.Additional drivers.
7.check the box for x86 for windows 2000,windows xp and windows 2003.
8.click ok ok.

Hope this helps.

Mike,

Thanks for your reply and your advices.

Migration is done and server is up and running since a few days now.

Just add an issue with 'additionnal spooler' installed by printer drivers. As a result main printer spooler service was crashing. I just disabled all 'parallels spoolers' and it works.

Conclusion:

-print migrator is not helping a lot for migration from 32 to 64 bits. Lucky to be under < 100 printers. Hard to imagine large print servers migration with this tool.
-Win2003 R2 has nice features to manage printers.
-Before going on a 64 Bits print server check printer drivers availability for x64 platform ... you may have bad surprises ... even from major printer manufacturer.

Rgds.
