    WS03 SP2 integrated RIS image fails - load needed DLLs for HAL

    Hi,

    I've set up a lab for testing WDS and RIS for a Server SOE. I have a mixed
    mode WDS/RIS server and when I try to build a machine from a WS03 SP2
    integrated RIS OS image I get the following error during boot up for the GUI
    mode setup.

    -->8
    Windows could not start because of an error in the software.
    Please report this problem as:
    load needed DLLs for HAL.
    Please contact your support person to report this problem

    To build my environment I started with a clean build of WS03 from an
    SP1-integrated CD. Then I added DNS and DHCP, ran DCPromo, then installed
    RIS and added a WS03 SP1 integrated RIS image from the CD.

    Then I installed SP2. After this I copied the I386 files from the CD to
    C:\I386 and then integrated SP2 into these. I then added the PE2.0 WIM from
    the WAIK to get WDS/RIS working together. Then I added the
    WS03-SP2-integrated RIS image.

    Booting to PE from WDS works, as does the SP1 install of WS03 from RIS.

    Ideas?

    Cheers,
    Jeremy.

    RE: WS03 SP2 integrated RIS image fails - load needed DLLs for HAL

    I've fixed this problem now.

    SP2 for WS03 doesn't seem to intergate properly uless you point it at a full
    copy of the distribution CD. I had been simply copying the I386 file to the
    disk, slipstreaming SP@ and pointing RIS to that for a new image.

    I found this article:
    <http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/c050419b-98a2-4802-b719-629a33a332391033.mspx?mfr=true>
    and the only difference in the instructions from what I was doing was
    copying the whole CD to disk, then slipstreaming SP2 to that. So I thought,
    "hey it's worth a try" and lo and behold it worked.
