    Domain Controller issues

Windows Server 2003 running as Domain Controller, DHCP Server, DNS Server, etc.

This server was a replacement for an older machine. I set it up as a second DC, promoted it to primary, then removed the old one. This was all done about a year ago and until today I thought it was all working fine. Apparently not...

I am unable to add a new user to my domain. Upon investigations I ran DCDIAG and got this:

    Code:
             The host 1455cea2-93fc-4d12-b9e8-11a740fd88e6._msdcs.LittleHuntHome.com
could not be resolved to an
IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc
             Although the Guid DNS name
             (1455cea2-93fc-4d12-b9e8-11a740fd88e6._msdcs.LittleHuntHome.com)
couldn't be resolved, the server name (lion.littlehunthome.com)
resolved to the IP address (10.0.0.100) and was pingable. Check that
the IP address is registered correctly with the DNS server.
             ......................... LION failed test Connectivity
    and
    Code:
          Starting test: FsmoCheck
Warning: DcGetDcName(GC_SERVER_REQUIRED) call failed, error 1355
A Global Catalog Server could not be located - All GC's are down.
Warning: DcGetDcName(PDC_REQUIRED) call failed, error 1355
A Primary Domain Controller could not be located.
The server holding the PDC role is down.
Warning: DcGetDcName(TIME_SERVER) call failed, error 1355
A Time Server could not be located.
The server holding the PDC role is down.
Warning: DcGetDcName(GOOD_TIME_SERVER_PREFERRED) call failed, error 1355
Can this be fixed? I hope so! I'd hate to have to re-build it.

    Hello TechnoTone,

Add new as a second DC ---------------- i agree

Promote to primary -------------- what did you mean with this? Moving all
5 FSMO roles to the new one and making it a Global catalog server?

How did you remove the old one ----------- with dcpromo?

How is DNS configured on the running, AD integrated? Please post an ipconfig
    /all from the DC.

    Best regards

I can't remember exactly how now - it was quite a while ago - but I don't remember changing 5 roles or anything about Global Catalog server.

I don't remember using dcpromo either. Sorry if I'm not being very helpful.

    Here's the IPConfig results:

    Re: Domain Controller issues

    Hello TechnoTone,

You have only one DC now, that's right?

First check out this one about the FSMO roles:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801

If the old one is TOALLY removed from the domain, you have to seize the roles
to the new one (moving is only possible if the old one still exists in the
    domain):
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504

Make it a Global catalog server:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313994

Is theire still an entry in Active Directory from the old DC, remove it with
NTDS util, because it will fill your event viewer with replication errors:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498

I see that Defrault gateway and DNS server are the same. Is it a Router or
    a server configured for routing?

!!!!!For all what you are tring keep in mind to save the data before or creaete
    an image before starting anything!!!!!

    Best regards

Thank you! It's now working correctly.

I believe I had already transferred all the FSMO roles but I hadn't made the new server the GC server. I also hadn't removed all traces of the old server from the AD and DNS.

Once again, thank you very much for the helpful and quick replies.

    Tony.
