    Bad Block

I have the following 3 warning messages in system log:

    1) The driver has detected that device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 has predicted
that it will fail. Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk
drive. A failure may be imminent.

    2) The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block

    3) Data was recovered using error correction code on device
    \Device\Harddisk0\DR0.

    What is wrong here?
Does it mean that I have to replace the harddisk?

    thanks
    Jolyn

If this is a server and if you're a server administrator then you would
know that flawed disks cause downtime and are therefore bad news.
If this is not a server then you should post in an appropriate non-server
    newsgroup.

These articles may help you. Also run the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

Probably. You at LEAST have to backup your critical data, and
system state, and the entire mahcine preferably.

After you are successfully backed up you can either try fixing the
drive (but the SMART info has probably predicted a complete
failure) by doing things like ChkDsk /R and SpinRite (commercial).

You may have to do Chkdsk /R to get the backups done but do
try once without it. Then again after you fix the sectors.

You don't mention what type of drive is involved so it's hard to give you a
definitive answer. Generally when I see this I replace the drive. Most
modern drives have spare sectors that the firmware substitutes in when it
sees a bad sector. If Windows is seeing the bad sectors then generally the
drive's firmware has given up as it has no more spare sectors to use. This
almost always means the drive is failing and the problem will only get
worse. Get what data you can off the drive and replace it now while you can
schedule the down time. The alternative is replacing it during unscheduled
down time. There are excellent programs like Spinrite that can sometimes fix
this. It all comes down to the price of Spinrite vs. the price of a new
drive. You also have to factor in your time. Spinrite takes many hours of
down time to run and in the end it may not solve the problem.
