RIS Problem installing RIPrep Windows 2003 Image

Hello,

I am having problems with a new RIS Installation. I've read everything I can
find on this and I can't seem to find an answer that fits my problem. We are
just now trying to implement RIS.

I have flat images created for Server 2003 Standard. The base win2k3 image
created with RISetup.exe and win2k3 CD now works fine, after much effort
trying to get it to recognise the Perc5 Raid controller and broadcome NIC
from the Dell Poweredge 1950 source to the same PE 1950 destination.

However, when I do a RIPrep image, I get errors when
installing to a target with the same hardware config. There is no difference
between hardware. In fact, after it did not work from one server to another,
I tried just Riprep'ing a new server, then RIS to the same server, with the
exact same problem.

RIPREP copies the image to the server. I then configure the riprep.sif file
as necessary. When I boot the target and select the
install image, the drive is formatted and partitioned (as I have configured
in the riprep.sif file.) The entire image is copied until the very end. I get
an error:

Setup cannot set permissions for device
\Harddisk0\Partition0\OemDir\<driver>.cat (this is the percsas.cat file,
then the oemscsi01.inf file, then the oemscsi02.inf file, then the
percsas.sys file. I press ESC after each error message.

If I boot with the newly created image, the Windows logo screen
comes up briefly, then the system just keeps rebooting.

I have read KB 237692, and tried what it suggested, but it did not help. I
have tried re-Riprep'ing several machines, but each time, I get the exact
same results.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: RIS Problem installing RIPrep Windows 2003 Image

Thanks. But while that is an interesting article, it does not apply in this
case. This article states that one method to resolve the problem is to...

"install the disk device that you want on the computer where you create the
RIPrep image. When you install the device before you create the RIPrep image,
the registry keys are configured correctly, and the device drivers are
installed on computers where you install the image."

....which is exactly what I have done. The drive is mounted at as the system
drive on the original image when the Riprep image is made.

In addition, The system is unbootable after the image is downloaded, so I
cannot review the registry permissions afterward. I did review these registry
setting on the one of the machines that I did the original image from and it
was correct.

thanks for the suggestion. Anyone other thoughts?

Hello. I have the same problem. I have a dirty solution.
When you see the error message "Setup cannot set permissions for device ..."
Just shut the server down (unplug-it). DON'T PRESS [ESC] !!!
The server will boot normaly !
Does somebody have a 'clean' solution ?
