    MIGRATE USERS TO NEW DOMAIN

I'd like to seamlessly migrate users to new domain, retain accounts and
permissions. Current/old domain is mixed-mode. New domain is native. I've
investigated dcpromo to a limited measure. I'd like to save myself from
having to visit 200+ workstations but need to populate each with dns server
info for new domain. Any thoughts, 3rd party software, etc.
    Thanks.

Re: MIGRATE USERS TO NEW DOMAIN

    Hello,

We can use the Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) to migrate the user,
group and computer objects and migrate the profiles, shares and files on the
    computers.

ADMT is a free tool which can be downloaded:

    Active Directory Migration Tool v3.0
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

    Addition Information on ADMT:
    ========================

    1. KB articles:

How to set up ADMT for Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 migration
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260871/en-us

326480 How to use Active Directory Migration Tool version 2 to migrate from
Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;326480

    2. The Domain Migration Cookbook contains some step-by-step screen shots
showing how to use ADMT in some scenario. It should be also helpful for us
    to understand the ADMT usage.

    Domain Migration Cookbook
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...eploy/cookbook
    /default.mspx

    3. ADMT usages are a bit different according to the detailed migration
scenarios. Please refer to the following documents according to your
    migration scenario there:

Restructuring Active Directory Domains Between Forests
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...r_overview.asp

Restructuring Active Directory Domains Within a Forest
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...a_overview.asp

    4. The following is an online session that introduction to domain migration
using ADMT which covers the features, requirements, and configurations
required to perform a domain migration between domains with ADMT.

Support WebCast: Domain Migration Using the Microsoft Active Directory
    Migration Tool
    http://support.microsoft.com/service...lurb082301.asp

    5. Help Document is also a good resource. To get detailed explanation on the
ADMT options, you can refer to the DomainMig.chm in the ADMT installation
folder. The "Wizards Page Descriptions" section contains explanations for
the check boxes on each ADMT wizard.

    Hope this helps!

I've tried ADMT and get the following error:
Specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted. Error: 1355.

Re: MIGRATE USERS TO NEW DOMAIN

    Hello,

This is Vincent who is Ada's backup.

    For this error, please check:

    1. If you can ping the FQDN of the source domain? As well as DC in source
    domain?

    2. Check if you implemented a secondary zone of the source domain?

    3. If you built a two-way trust between the two domains?

Please refer to the KB article before you perform migration:

Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;326480

    Thanks.
