    The RPC server is unavailable

We have this recurring problem on 4 of our servers. One is a file server
and three are SQL boxes. Here is their configurations:

    3ea HP BL20p G2
    2ea 2.8GHz Xeon
    4ea 1GB HP cert RAM
    1ea 36GB HDD
1ea active NIC (Static IP) all other NICs disabled

    1ea HP BL20p G3
    2ea 3.8GHz Xeon dual core
    4ea 2GB HP cert RAM
    1ea 36GB HDD
1ea active NIC (Static IP) all other NICs disabled

They also connect to our MSA1000 SAN and an MSL6030 tape library for backups
    via Fiber.

We have them all configured nearly identically Win Svr 2K3 Enterprise SP1
    and the following applications loaded.

    Altiris Agents
    HP Array Configuration Utility
HP ProLiant Rack Infrastructure Interface Service
    McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.X
MS SQL Server 2000 SP4 (SQL boxes only)
    PowerAlert 11.10b for UPS
    Secure Path Manager 4.0 sp2
Symantec BackupExec 10d for Windows Servers

Our problems began about 3 months ago. On the weekends we would receive the
errors below, our backups would fail and any job requiring authentication
would fail. We would have to log in with a local admin account and restart
the servers before things would work properly again. We searched the
internet and found some similar errors which involved changing virtual drive
sizes, making changes to the registry, etc. and things smoothed out and we
didn't have a recurrence of the problems until about two weeks ago.

I have added the logged errors we are seeing (5719, 8032, and 8021) below.
We have not made any changes or installed any new applications. The problems
    just started backup again.

I am unable to use DFS. I get the error message "The RPC server is
unavailable" when I try to show the root in Distributed File System. DFS was
working until we demoted the dc and built a new one and now can't get DFS
working. The original dc was Windows 2003, the new one is Windows 2003 R2. I
have checked that the services remote procedure call and remote procedure
call locator are running on both the servers.

I have 2 servers that are also experiencing this problem but I have not been
able to find a cause. We have been using a scheduled restart command to
reboot both of these servers every so often. Looking at your configuration
though made me notice that you are running PowerAlert for TrippLite UPS, it
so happens that my 2 servers are also running that software. It has also
made me notice that the two servers with this problem are also the only ones
I have running that software. I will test this by disabling the software
and seeing if things are fixed. I'll post back and let you know if that
    fixes anything for me.

Re: The RPC server is unavailable

You hit the nail on the head! It turns out that we had changed out the
server that was managing our UPS and to which the blade servers connected to
get the UPS status. Well, we had neglected to update the PowerAlert software
on the blades to reference the new server and this was causing our problems!
Once we reastablished the connection to the "master" server, our problems
    disappeared.

i have exactly the same problem on my SQL Server but i don't run any
    triplite software.....

    Config is:
    HP Proliant DL380, 3.0gh with 4Gig ram
    Windows 2003 Server STD SP1
    SQL Server 2000 SP3

We are running a bunch of SQL reliable software on this machine like,
Symantec Backup Exec, Laserfiche, Magic (Helpdesk software) and some other
    web application.

So everything was fine until about 1 month then we began to have this kind
    of error:

    ==========================

The kerberos error will repeat each time any AD authentification will be
call by a software. I can ping/telnet my domain controller without problem. I
tried to increase the page file size, was ok for 2-3 day then come back.

I disabled the AD sync of the last software i installed on and was thinking
i found it because instead of crashing every 24 hour i was ok for an entire
week but today i had to reboot it two time in less than 6 hour....

The server is a member server of an AD 2000.....
Please help, i really don't know what to try next....

I also am fighting with this problem. Wondered if anyone has come up with
any ideas on how to fix this yet. Only thing we run on the box is
coldfusion. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

    The RPC,server is unavailable

I've two domain A and B. Users in domain B have to login on a terminal
server in domain A. Between A and B there's an external trust.

When I try to login on my terminal server (windows 2003 std r2 sp2) I
    get error:

Unable to obtain Terminal Server User Configuration. Error: The RPC
    server is unavailable.
    Event Id: 1219 Source: Winlogon

I've verified online, there's a KB821929 from microsoft tals about an
issue with winlogon.exe and roaming profiles, but is not applicable to
my system as I've a different version (my ver is 5.2.3790.3959 against
    microsoft wrong version 5.2.3790.68).

Also I've tested to login with a different user never logged in before
and I get the same problem.

I've verified that Netbios is on, tcp/ip netbios helper is running, and
    there're no dns issues.

    Any hints?

The following is from a different post. Maybe it will help you.

I think I figured it out. My solution would pertain to those using SBS 2003
    with ISA 2004.

The RPC port 135 is being blocked - by the Microsoft Firewall Client for ISA
2004. To unblock, do the following:

    Go to ISA Server Management
    Browse to "Firewall Policy"
    Select "Edit System Piolicy"
Browse to "Active Directory" under "Authentication Services"
Unchek the box titled "Enforce strict RPC compliance"
    Click OK
    Apply the new settings

Is this another case of Microsoft protecting us from ourselves?

Firewalls buddy - what is your firewall structure like?
Have you configured any special ports to be used by RPC or have you left it
    at default.
you see the way RPC works is that it randomly selects a dynamic port between
a huge window of ports - is you have firewalls between most probably these
ports are blocked... there is a way to mod your reg to reduce the RPC dynamiv
port range, and then just have that opened on your firewall - but again this
is all if you actually have firewalls -

I wanted to see if the issue below was resolved and how? We are getting the same errors and having a difficult time tracking down the root cause.
