Installing Print Management Console on Win2003

    Hello,

My print server is on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP1 box. I want
to install the Print Management Console (PMC or pmcmgmt.exe). The only
installer I can find is for WinXP, though. When I try to use it on the
server, I get the pesky "The updatebr.inf file is invalid" error.

Anyone know how or where I can get the PMC for Win2003?

Print Management is a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in that
enables you to install, view, and manage all of the printers in your
organization from any computer running Windows Server 2003 R2.

Here are some important notes about the requirements for Print Management
and the print servers that you can monitor using Print Management:
-You can install Print Management only on computers running Windows Server
    2003 R2
-You can use Print Management to monitor printers that are on print servers
running Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, and Windows
    Server 2003 R2 operating systems.

If your w2k3 SP1 server is not R2 you can't install it. It's part of the
Windows Components, and you can add it through the Add/Remove Windows
Component \ Management and Monitoring tools panel.

    Regards,

    Carlo

Hey, thanks. Okay, so I guess my question is how or where I can get the
R2 for Win2003? I am guessing that this is something I can just
download. It's not on Windows Updates, though.

Windows Server 2003 R2 is not a common update to Windows Server 2003 SP1,
it's an upgraded release. Consider that you have to pay for a different
license to use it. For more information look here:

Got it. I am better off just installing the PMC on an WinXP box, then.
Do you know if I can still use PushPrinterConnections.exe if the PMC is
    not on the server?

    Thanks!

RE: Installing Print Management Console on Win2003

Ok, I think I am having the same thing as Chris W. I want to use the Print
Management Console (PMC) on a Server2003 sp1 box. I got PMC to work in
another domain that does not have any Server2003 machines. I just updated
the Ad schema, updated the XP MMC to 3.0, and I am running the PMC on a XP
box to hook to a print server that is 2000 sp4. On the pmcmgmt.exe download
    page M$ has:

    System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003
    • Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2
    • Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

That would mean that Server 2003 SHOULD work. (Notice no R2 there by Server
    2003)
