| Problem with Shadow Copy actual response from MS on this newsgroup. I paid for this service as part of my Technet Plus, so I'm hoping they are actaully listening somewhere. I have been looking for an answer to this problem. I seem to have found a lot of questions about it, but none of the answers work or would apply to my problem. I have a windows 2003 DC. All it has is Windows, with no 3rd party programs or utilities. I have written a backup script to backup some of the folders on C: and the system state. When I run it manually, it hangs at "Preparing to backup using volume shadow copy". When it runs as a scheduled task, the event viewer says crashes with event ID 12298: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The I/O writes cannot be held during the shadow copy creation period on volume \\?\Volume{a6075b76-de45-11d9-ac30-806e6f6e6963}\. The volume index in the shadow copy set is 0. Error details: Open[0x00000000], Flush[0x00000000], Release[0x80042314], OnRun[0x00000000]. and also event ID 12230: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The shadow copy could not be committed - operation timed out. Error context: DeviceIoControl(\\?\Volume{a6075b76-de45-11d9-ac30-806e6f6e6963} - 0000014C,0x0053c010,0003A5A0,0,0003B5A8,4096,[0]). I have tried this with the volume shadow copy turned on and off and I still get the same problem. Based on some information I found, I contacted Microsoft and they sent me the hotfix from KB887827, but I can't install it on my server. I get an error "Setup has detected that the service pack of this system is newer than the update you are trying to install". So no luck there. One suggestion I did find in my searches was a suggestion to turn off using shadow copy for the backup. So I have specified the /SNAP:off option in my backup command, yet it is still trying to make a shadow copy. Anyone got any other ideas? Thanks! Brian |

| Re: Problem with Shadow Copy
Hi, Found something maybe helps. This behavior(Cannnot install KB891957 ) can occur if the log file or database corruption exists in the %Systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 folder. To eliminate this problem, follow these steps: 1. Click "Start", and then click "Run". 2. In the "Open" box, type "cmd" (without the quotation marks), and then click "OK". 3. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line: "net stop cryptsvc ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2 net start cryptsvc exit" (without the quotation marks) Important: Do not rename the Catroot folder. The Catroot2 folder is automatically recreated by Windows, but the Catroot folder is not recreated if it is renamed. If this problem persists, you may continue to apply other suggestions in this MS KB article: 822798 You cannot install some updates or programs http://support.microsoft.com/?id=822798 Now try to install KB891957 again to see the results Best regards, Vincent Xu Microsoft Online Partner Support ================================================== ==== Get Secure! - www.microsoft.com/security ================================================== ==== When responding to posts, please "Reply to Group" via your newsreader so that others may learn and benefit from this issue. ================================================== ==== This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ================================================== ==== -------------------- >>NNTP-Posting-Date: Tue, 16 May 2006 15:00:23 -0500 >>From: "Brian" <wouldntulike2know> >>Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.server.general >>References: <F98C7CEA-1CE1-4CF3-B90D-0280850BA8CF@microsoft.com> <2UuZq6KdGHA.220@TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl> <NtGdnV8Ig4305_7ZnZ2dnUVZ_sGdnZ2d@golden.net> <L1zUedadGHA.188@TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl> >>Subject: Re: Problem with Shadow Copy >>Date: Tue, 16 May 2006 16:00:22 -0400 >>X-Priority: 3 >>X-MSMail-Priority: Normal >>X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2869 >>X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2869 >>X-RFC2646: Format=Flowed; Original >>Message-ID: <b-CdnUrWk_TKsvfZnZ2dnUVZ_tCdnZ2d@golden.net> >>Lines: 10 >>NNTP-Posting-Host: 209.183.155.70 >>X-Trace: sv3-4UxZ8PeBHG0DeiBoppeIU/kov0mIehw15557ADH2o2Oz1NktoP67aMpilKlC/IyofFogRLEi CuzH49F!4PEi13X42SZFrZUJkkworeTyF3H2Zfk4GJC6KcmMZz GizqpszuaQ31nG7gtgjqw4w9tA TFuCi2sf!VKfdSJTqjsI= >>X-Complaints-To: abuse@golden.net >>X-DMCA-Complaints-To: abuse@golden.net >>X-Abuse-and-DMCA-Info: Please be sure to forward a copy of ALL headers >>X-Abuse-and-DMCA-Info: Otherwise we will be unable to process your complaint properly >>X-Postfilter: 1.3.32 >>Path: TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl!TK2MSFTNGP01.phx.gbl!TK2MSFT FEEDS01.phx.gbl!newsfeed00 .sul.t-online.de!t-online.de!border2.nntp.dca.giganews.com!border1.nn tp.dca. giganews.com!nntp.giganews.com!local01.nntp.dca.gi ganews.com!nntp.golden.net !news.golden.net.POSTED!not-for-mail >>Xref: TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl microsoft.public.windows.server.general:96159 >>X-Tomcat-NG: microsoft.public.windows.server.general >> >>"Vincent Xu [MSFT]" <v-xuwen@online.microsoft.com> wrote >>> This is a quick note to let you know that I am researching your issue and >>> will get back to you as soon as possible. Bottom line, there are really two problems: 1. Shadow copy doesn't work (on either of my domain controllers). 2. The backup program seems to be ignoring the /snap:off parameter to backup without using shadow copy. Brian |

Hi, Based on my research, this behavior may be caused by improper third party Volume Shadow Provider. You may run "vssadmin list providers" and check to see if any third party providers are listed and what the Shadow Copy Provider"{63f8f587-1498-4f30-b2b7-018b04e15d5a}" is for. I am not sure if you have Windows 2003 SP1 installed. If not, please update the system to the latest Service Pack. The SP1 includes some updates for VSS. Let me know the results. Hi Brian, Sorry for delay in response due to my sickness last week. I posted your issue in our internal forum but no response. I suggest you collect some system information using Microsoft Configuration Capture Utility , and please send the CAB (Zip) file to me. Please download the tool: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...5-a579-30b0bd9 15706/MPSRPT_Alliance_X86.EXE For more information and overview, please refer to link below: KB818742 Overview of the Microsoft Configuration Capture Utility (MPS_REPORTS) http://support.microsoft.com/?id=818742 Note: The CAB file will be generated for your convenience in the %systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Report\Cab directory called %COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports_.CAB. The CAB file will contain the reports generated by the MPS Reporting Tool. If the CAB file isn't produced, please compress all of the result files under %systemroot%\MPSReport\Setup\Report as a Zip file. (Note: %systemroot% is the folder where you install Windows.) Please send me the CAB file via the email : v-xuwen@microsoft.com Thanks Best regards, Vincent Xu Microsoft Online Partner Support ================================================== ==== Get Secure! - www.microsoft.com/security ================================================== ==== When responding to posts, please "Reply to Group" via your newsreader so that others may learn and benefit from this issue. ================================================== ==== This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ================================================== ==== -------------------- >>X-Tomcat-ID: 133551970 >>References: <F98C7CEA-1CE1-4CF3-B90D-0280850BA8CF@microsoft.com> <2UuZq6KdGHA.220@TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl> <NtGdnV8Ig4305_7ZnZ2dnUVZ_sGdnZ2d@golden.net> <L1zUedadGHA.188@TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl> <b-CdnUrWk_TKsvfZnZ2dnUVZ_tCdnZ2d@golden.net> <fTUl$WYeGHA.188@TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl> <r_2dnU_uncqHu_bZRVn-ug@golden.net> <P6odBSleGHA.3900@TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl> <FM2dnRycPJ367PHZRVn-uA@golden.net> <qfZ#6JyeGHA.220@TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl> <ivOdnWOxLegKU_DZnZ2dnUVZ_umdnZ2d@golden.net> >>MIME-Version: 1.0 >>Content-Type: text/plain >>Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit >>From: v-xuwen@online.microsoft.com (Vincent Xu [MSFT]) >>Organization: Microsoft >>Date: Tue, 23 May 2006 08:42:27 GMT >>Subject: Re: Problem with Shadow Copy >>X-Tomcat-NG: microsoft.public.windows.server.general >>Message-ID: <DVxgZTkfGHA.3884@TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl> >>Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.server.general >>Lines: 77 >>Path: TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl >>Xref: TK2MSFTNGXA01.phx.gbl microsoft.public.windows.server.general:96613 >>NNTP-Posting-Host: TOMCATIMPORT1 10.201.218.122 >> >>Hi Brian, >> >>This is a quick note to let you know that I am researching your issue and >>will get back to you as soon as possible.
