    DNSAPI error: 11166

    I have a 2000 DC and a 2003 server that runs SQL 2000. I have been receiving
    this error since day 1 of the 2003 server joining domain. (6 months) There is
    an RR in the reverse zone. Any help would be great. Thanks
    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: DnsApi
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 11166
    Date: 8/11/2005
    Time: 11:20:58 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: W2K3SQL
    Description:
    The system failed to register host (A) resource records (RRs) for network
    adapter
    with settings:

    Adapter Name : {551AE832-67C7-49E3-BA90-3E4D7FF5C4B6}
    Host Name : w2k3sql
    Primary Domain Suffix : Domain.internal
    DNS server list :
    192.168.254.5
    Sent update to server : 192.168.254.5
    IP Address(es) :
    192.168.254.4

    The reason the system could not register these RRs was because of a
    security related problem. The cause of this could be (a) your computer does
    not have permissions to register and update the specific DNS domain name set
    for this adapter, or (b) there might have been a problem negotiating valid
    credentials with the DNS server during the processing of the update request.

    You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its
    settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command prompt. If problems
    still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator. For
    specific error code, see the record data displayed below.

    Re: DNSAPI error: 11166

    The permissions on the existing DNS record are not allowing it to be updated.

    Try deleting the existing A record and any reverse zone PTR RR, and then run a netdiag /fix
    to re-register everything in DNS and see if that takes care of it. This is pretty
    quick but of course should be done when people are not accessing it.
