DNS error 0x0000232b when trying to join the domain.

Hi, we are in the process of migrating our Windows 2000 network to a new IP
addressing scheme. We have bound the Domain controller with the DNS server
with two IP addresses, one for the old addressing scheme and one for the new
    scheme.

The old addressing scheme works great. When I try to join the domain from
the new scheme it gives me the 0x0000232b rcode_name_error which has to do
    with bad srv records.

Any ideas what the problems are? How can I make DNS work properly on both IP
    addresses?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, try simply running a netdiag /fix on all DCs. This should correct any missing or invalid SRV records in DNS for the new
    addresses. [ http://support.microsoft.com/?id=321708 ]

If that doesn't do it, post back with the errors you get from netdiag and dcdiag.

Steve, thanks so much for your help. I ended up running ipconfig /registerdns
on all dns servers and that resolved it. Thanks for confirming it was a dns
    issue.

I am having the same issue.
    I've tried the ipconfig /registerdns
Then net stop netlogon followed by net start logon.
I am not getting any errors in event view for DNS.
My FQDN is natemac.homeunix.net and I have DNS configured to use open DNS server as a follower....

When I try to join the domain from another box, running windows xp sp3, i get the error about the missing SRV records.

An odd thing is when I put in my domain I get a really long domain record

    _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.natemac.homeunix.net

    query...

I installed the DNS service when I was setting up the fresh 2003 server install as an AD integrated DNS / domain controller...

Actually, now when I try to join the domain i dont get an error but get an account login prompt...try to login but get access is denied using an user account i setup

    username: chimchim

    password: ********

i guess the DNS name server finally resolved?

Like i said i am using the DNS server on the machine for the primary DNS and have setup a forwarder to one of the open dns servers....i guess i should add another forwarder to the other open dns server? will that work ok? i need to use forwarders cause my server, while using a static ip, is connected to the router on my lan and i need that external name resolution (my dns server IS NOT configured as a root DNS server, rather I am using the Internet root servers for name resolution outside my LAN, right?) I am noob!

I guess now I need to make an account in AD users and computers that will give me access!

Seems like you really have to get the DNS right for the AD to work, not the other way around!

If all of these conditions exist and you still do not see your SRV records, stop and start the Netlogon service. This action forces the domain controller to re-register the appropriate SRV records. Using the netdiag /fix command on the domain controller will verify that all SRV records that are in the Netlogon.dns file are registered on the primary DNS server
