Trying to add Server 2008R2 to a 2003 domain

I am trying to add a 2008R2 server to our domain and I will want to make it a domain controller.

The first thing I did was to log onto our 2003 domain controller, and run adrep32 /forestprep from the 2008R2 cd

Took a long time (server hours) but it did finish and said that the command completed successfully.
    Next i did adprep32 /domainprep
    and the response was
"Log on to the schema master myserver.mydomain.local for this forest, run the following command from the installation media to complete the forest update first: adprep.exe /forestprep
and then rerun adprep.exe /domainprep on infrastructure master again."

at this point, I double re-checked and I am on the schema master, infrastructure master, etc.....

what needs to happen to get this to work??

You can anytime join 2008 R2 Servers to your 2003 Domain, but only as member without changing the AD schema. If this is what you want, than just join the new server to your existing AD Domain. You have to de-promote him first. However, I would do a clean install of the 2 servers with windows 2008 R2 and join them to the 2003 domain.

The 2008R2 machine is currently a member of the domain, I am trying to promot it to be an additional Domain controller.

You can try to remove the member server from the domain. Delete the object from AD and then rejoin the server to the domain. You just have to run the same hvremote command again and it will properly add it to the dcom group. You could also try to do a metadata cleanup to remove the old server from AD and then seize the infrastructure role to the remaining domain controller.
