| KMS server and Windows 7
I have a KMS server that has been set up and working fine for Server 2008 and R2. I do not want this server to active Windows 7 clients but I believe it is. On new Windows 7 installs, if I do a 'slmgr -dli' it says it is activated and licensed and references my KMS server. I don't remember entering a Windows 7 KMS key on the server. So - is there a way to deny activation of Windows 7 clients and/or revoke those that may have already registered? Thank you. |

Yeah there should be a solution but you need to configure that :-) The KMS is is possibly now published via your DNS and the Win7 clients do query automatically your KMS server. Check on your DNS server -> yourdomain.com -> _tcp -> _VLMCS If so, you can delete this entry and set manually during your setup (unantended) the KMS server on your servers -> slmgr -skms "IP":1688 (hope that is correct, but you should check that). |

Thank you Ramazan. Yes the KMS server is published in DNS. I'd like to leave it there for my servers but just not have to respond to Windows 7 requests. Is that possible? Wouldn't I have had to have added a Windows 7 key into the KMS server to get it to hand out Windows 7 activations? |

| Re: KMS server and Windows 7
I'm not an licensing expert :-) but I think this depends on the channel of your KMS key. What KMS channel key do you have ? A,B or C ? Depending on the KMS channel your server is able to activate the incoming requests. Possibly there is also a key type only for server requests. also that could be directly verified with MS as this is also a licensing topic. I think the easiest way for now would be to manually add the KMS server string to the servers after they're installed (unantended, GPO, powershell...).... |

Hello Glen, The answers to licenses and such can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/ Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum specifically for IT Pros located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...egory/w7itpro/ . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to also check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback. |
