| Activation problems of WIndows Server 2008 R2
As a member of the WebsiteSpark program I get a license for Windows Server 2008 R2. I have installed this version of Windows but can not active the OS. When trying to activate with the liecsnse code provided by the MSDN downloads site I get the following error message: "The product key you have entered will not work with this edition of Windows Server 2008 R2 You nust either run Windows Server 2008 R2 Setup or enter a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard product key" After posting the query to the customer service I get the following answer: "Windows Server 2008 R2 automatically installs as a KMS client. Hence you will have to convert it into a MAK client, in order to use your WebsiteSpark MAK key for activation. Information and resources around the activation of Windows Server 2008 R2 and the conversion of a KMS into a MAK client can be found on the following website. http://blogs.msdn.com/msdnsubscriptions/archive/2009/08/20/some-windows-7-and-server-2008-r2-activation-resources.aspx" I read the documentation and found that in order convert a KMS client to a MAK client I first needed to install the MAK. Thus I tried the following command: slmgr.vbs /ipk <MultipleActivationKey> And got the following response/error code: "On a computer running Microsfto Windows non-core edition, run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0xC004F015" Doing that gives the error description: "The Software Licensing Service reported that the license is not installed" And now I am stuck. Please help me, I do not know how to proceed! Thank you, Knut Sveidqvist |

If you are entitled to an MSDN copy, and you downloaded an MSDN copy, and specified an MSDN key, it should just work. Where did you get yourversion? |

Free support for MSDN and WebsiteSpark; http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subs.../aa948875.aspx http://www.microsoft.com/Web/websitespark/Support.aspx Might as well take advantage of your benifits. Otherwise do a slmgr.vbs -dli and post the output (masking exact license PIDS if any). Did you cut and past the PID? Sure you used the right version (2008/R2 Standard)? -- /kj |

Sure you used the right version (2008/R2 > Standard)? > Thanks for your response. I got both the software and the key from the MSDN page for downloading software. This is the output from the slmgr.vbs /dli: ------------------------------------------------- Name: Windows Server(R), ServerStandard edition Description: Windows Operating System - Windows Server(R), VOLUME_KMSCLIENT channel Partial Product Key: R7VHC License Status: Initial grace period Time remaining: 19680 minute(s) (13 day(s)) Please use slmgr.vbs /ato to activate and update KMS client information in order to update values. -------------------------------------------------- I contacted the MSDN support and they now say it is a KMS key. Do I need to install some sort of volume licensing tool for this? I got a page come the customer support showing an elaborate procedure for setting up KMS. I'm not using Microsoft DNS server, this is a stand alone server that I just want to activate... Getting a bit desperate here. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...tall_KMS_Hosts |

You can't install KMS for this and you shouldn't need to. MSDN is the place to help you out with this - try re-entering the key, copying and pasting *exactly* from the key on the MSDN page next to the exact item you downloaded. |
