Windows Server 2008 - Limited Admin Rights

    Windows 2008 - RTM - X-64
    Logged on as Admin
    OS Installed by me
    Workgroup, no domain
Fresh install on empty partition, not an update.
OS copy is legitimate from MSDN Developers Subscriber site

    Hi,

I installed Windows Server 2008 RTM and have limited admin rights, e.g.

    1. Not all items show up in Control Panel.
    2. Desktop, right-click only shows Change Resolution, doesn't show
    appearance.
    3. No place to change appearance in Server Manager either.
    4. Can't add to or modify registry.

NOTE: Did not have this problem in previous install of Server 2008 RC. Had
    full Admin rights.

This is fresh install on clean, newly formatted partition.

Can't find anything in Google on this.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Alan

    Hello Alan,

Are you working with the administrator account or with an account that is
member of the local administrators? The latter one are restricted and for
some functionality you have to use rightclick and RUNAS option.

Also you have to install user experience features to have some additional
    options:

Re: Windows Server 2008 - Limited Admin Rights

    Hi Meinoff,

    Thanks for your reply.

I'm using the default Admininistrator account established with the setup of
    RE RTM.

I also had added the Desktop Experience feature.

I'm surprised that I can't even get to Personallization. In all other
versions of Windows, a user could set his preferences, unless a policy was
    set to disable this.

    Regards,

    Alan

    Meinoff,

    All appears OK now.

After adding Desktop Experience and rebooting two times, I can Personalize
    and edit registry.

It didn't work after one reboot.

    Thanks again.
