volume license key and Product keys?

Hi All,

As I am investigating/ auditing all MS Licensing for our new company. I has
found all the servers have the same product key and according to the former
IT manager, this product key is Volume license key so we are allowed to do
this. Is it true?

Again according to him and his print-out from Volume Licensing Services
Centre.
all servers version: 2008 Standard.
on Tax invoices: 2003 R2 Standard.
on Servers: 2003 R2 Standard.
It does not make sense to me at all, Can someone please explain.

Thank you in advance.

Regards

Hello vdz,

For Volume licensing you have one key with special installation disks that
only accept VLK.

As Meinolf said, the VL keys are specific to an organization, there is only
one per org per product, and use a different set of media than retail or OEM
media.

To find your complete set of keys and products that your company is
authorized for, visit the licensing center, and logon to access your info.
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/e...ctivation.aspx

If you don't have a logon, follow the instructions, or call the vendor that
they were purchased from. They should have provided guidance to access your
profile.

Re: volume license key and Product keys?

Thank you Meinolf.

When I asked him for all medias, he said he lost it and gave me a burnt copy
that he said he downloaded form MS Website????

And another thing is that it does not match with the tax invoice as I
mentioned earlier.
Thought I'd let you know he was an IT manager and also a vendor who supplied
all MS Software and licenses to company. Because I wanted to make everything
crystal clear before we cannot get a hold of him.

If neccessary, should I contact MS without getting in trouble, in case he
did not do the right thing?

Thanks again

Regards

Re: volume license key and Product keys?

Hello vdz,

you can also download VLK software from MS as far as i know. But for th invoice,
well take all you have and call MS support, then you and your boss can be
sure what you have.

Best regards

That's correct. Usually when you purchase VL software, they simply send you
an email with info about logging on to the licensing site where you can get
all the keys coming to you, as well as download the media in ISO form. Most
of my customers are on VL, and tell you what, I don't know anyone would buy
anything else. They give you lots of extra stuff, for example, purchasing
Office 2007 VL, they also gave us Office 2003 in the list, and an additional
list of software additions for Office, both versions.

Easiest is to simply check your account at Microsoft's site. It appears VDZ
will need to ask the IT manager for the contact info, or the boss to get it
out of him, otherwise, there will be no way to find out.

Re: volume license key and Product keys?

Thank you Ace and Meinolf,

In summary. With VL software we can install servers with one product key and
must have VL media that can download from MS website.
I already asked him to give me a logon to access the MS Licensing Service
centre.
See how I go.

Regards,
