Server backup failing before start

Sponsored Links
The server is Windows is Server 2008 Enterprise X64 with Hyper-v role
enabled. No additional applications/roles/features enabled.

I had made a previous post here, entitled Windows Server Backup Failing. The
problem has gotten worse. It started with:
"I've been having issues recently attempting to do full backup on one of my
servers. While the C:\ backup as soon as the second partition starts, and
the backup fails with error
2155348010 (One of the backup files could not be created.). Please rerun
backup once issue is resolved."

and now when I try to backup it goes as far as "Creating the shadow copy of
volumes requested for backup" and stops with summary saying:

"Backup stopped before completing.
Detailed Error:
ERROR - The shared restore point operation failed with error (0x81000101)
The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try again this operation.
Timed out before the shared protection point was created."

I was hoping someone might have an idea why backups aren't worknig on this
server.

Initially I was deploying the wbadmin through Altiris to run on the server.
I then tried setting it up as a task within the server removing Altiris from
the situation with the same result.

See if this link helps:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...f-b6ddfa0ed88c

Also google:
ERROR - The shared restore point operation failed with error (0x81000101)

I read that before and for what it is worth. It did work, but something has
changed to make it stop.

RE: Server backup failing before start

From the description, it seems that you encountered the error message when
you tried to take backup on Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition with
Hyper-V role enabled.

Backup stopped before completing.

Detailed Error:

ERROR - The shared restore point operation failed with error (0x81000101)
The creation of a shadow copy has timed out.

Troubleshooting steps:

1. Please run "vssadmin list writers" to check if "Microsoft Hyper-V VSS
Writer" has been registered and list out. Please also check if there is any
error with any Writers.

2. As you said "While the C:\ backup as soon as the second partition
starts, and the backup fails with error 2155348010", I want to know whether
the second partition is a local hard disk drive or it is a LUN/ iSCSI
storage disk. Does the second partition contain the vhd file or VM
configuration file of the virtual machines on the Hyper-V?

3. Also to narrow down the root cause of the issue, please boot the
problematic server with the clean boot mode, and then test to see if the
system state backup can be done successfully on it.

Take system state backup in Clean Boot mode

1.1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter
1.2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable
All third party Services.
1.3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items
1.4. Click OK and choose Restart
1.5. Take system state backup with Wbamin

Wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:<drive>CH

Can you backup the systemstate successfully? If not, do you see any error
message? If yes, please test to see if you can take full backup of that
server.

4. If the issue still exist, I would like to suggest that you run "CHKDSK
/F" on that server to fix potential error on the disk.

5. The issue could be also caused by invalid entry:

Please delete all .bak folders from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList, and then check if it will be helpful.

Hope this can be helpful.

I'd like to check how things are going. Did you have the chance to try the
troubleshooting steps? If you have any other questions, please do not
hesitate to let me know. I look forward to your further updates.
