Hi, I've never done this before and I need to retire my old 2003 DC. How is this done? |

Hello micser, Do you use folder redirection or the user properties to point to the shared folder on the server? The data itself you can copy wit robocopy, included in server 2008, including the permissions. Or you can use ntbackup on the 2003 server and import it on the 2008 with this tool: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > Hi, > > I've never done this before and I need to retire my old 2003 DC. Thanks Meinolf. I am reconfiguring the user profiles to use folder redirection, but the other files in the profile would still need to be moved over. The second part is interesting as I would have thought that the regular MS backup would do a restore. So, in the case of moving these profiles and their respective files, I would not have to follow the same guidelines as robocopy? Meaning that the MS backup and restore would keep the security settings of the folders intact? Thanks, Mike |

Hello micser, Backup has changed within 2008 and is not longer the way as before with folder and files backup. You can do only volume/disk backup's. Because of that the tool is available to restore older with ntbackup created ones. Normally also the permissions are backed up, so they should be restored even to 2008. Make a test with some data. Good advice. I'll have to do some research on this and test as you said. It will be interesting to find out how volume backup's in 2008 work and if they are better than the previous way. thanks again...:) |
