Can't see external HD thru windows explorer.

I've just installed Win Server 2003 on my home PC, and I'm a newbie using it.
I plugged in a USB-type external drive into my machine, and it seems to be
installed properly. Device manager says it's working, the "remove hardware"
tool in the systems tray sees it, but win explorer can't see the disk at all.
So I can't get a drive letter assigned to it, or access it at all. Is there
some security setting on Server that is stopping this? Any suggestions?

Thanks, Mike

One other piece of data. A USB-flash drive plugged into this port (or
another) works fine. And this HD works on other machines. Mike

I guess I figured it out. I had to go into Disk Manager and manually assign
a drive letter to this HD. I don't know if I'll have to do that each time,
but at least it works this way. Mike
