    2008 SBS shadow backup error

    Hello,

I'm getting the following error on my 2008 SBS when doing backups.

"A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Unknown error (0x800423f4)"

I have disabled the Shadow copy service and stopped SQL but am still getting this error.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Hello,

can you see the following error in the Application event log?
    Event ID: 12290
    Description:
Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: ASR writer Error 0x80070001. hr =
    0x00000000

Is KB952580 -- Rollup 4 for Exchange server 2007 Service Pack 1 installed?

It's also possible that the issue is related to an OEM partition on the
    disk(s) marked as active: ->

    Cause:
Presence of a OEM Partition active, not recognised from the ASR Writer.

    RĂ©solution:
Delete the OEM partition and mark active the windows system boot partition:

Instead of deleting it, its possible to mark a different partition as
    active:
    1. Open a command prompt as Administrator.
    Run diskpart and press enter
    list disk
    sel disk 0
    sel partition 2
    active

    However:
"but as system files and folders i.e. BootMgr file and the \boot folder will
    also be located on
OEM partition. So, there are good chances that server will go into no-boot
situation after C:\ will be marked as active as BootMgr file and the \boot
    folder
    will not be there."

So, some more steps must be added:
    1. Copy the BootMgr file and the \boot folder to the c: volume from a
    different
    2008 server
    2. Set C: as active in Disk Management.
    3. Boot to Command prompt using the 2008 DVD
    4. Use diskpart to set C: as active using the following commands:
    DISKPART
    SELECT DISK 0
SELECT VOLUME 2 (assuming volume 2 is your C: and has Windows in it)
    ACTIVE
    EXIT
    5. Use attrib -h -s c:\boot\bcd to remove system and hidden attributes of
    bcd
    file.
    6. Rename the bcd file.
    7. run bootrec /rebuildBCD - be sure to click "Y" to add the Windows path.
    8. Optional: run x:\sources\recovery\startrep.exe from the command prompt
    9. Restart the server

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Luca Chiaverini

Thanks Luca! It worked. :) I did however have to rebuild BCD from a server CD as I got a "cannot locate bootmgr." It's all good now though. Thanks again.
