    Windows 2008 Print Server Configuration

    Hi,

I intend install a Windows Server 2008 as Print Server that will host 30
network Printers and I would like a suggestion about its configuration:
    - I intend to configure a Virtual Server (Hyper-V) with 1 GB RAM and 40 GB
    for HD.
The HD I will partionning it 25 GB for SO, 2 GB for SWAP and 10 for SPOOL.

    Any suggestion?

    Thanks.

    Luiz

Sounds fine. I've not used Hyper-V much. Do the partitions make that much
of a difference in the virtual space? Hyper-V machine works fine for a
print server. I just place the spool directory on c:\spool.

32 or 64 bit OS? If you are installing x64 make sure there are x64 print
drivers available either in the OS or from the vendor.

Re: Windows 2008 Print Server Configuration

    Hi Alan,

I will use Fixed Disk in Hyper-V and to be honest I don´t know how the
partition will work in that cenario but so far, in the lab, is very well.
One question, if you let me, all my clients are Windows XP 32 bit so is
there problem If I configure a Windows Server 64 bit?
I know that I mus install the 2 platform drivers (32 and 64) but I will have
    compatibility problem?

    Thanks again, Alan.

    Best Regards.

    Luiz

Re: Windows 2008 Print Server Configuration

I've been running x64 print servers for over 4 years ( yes longer than the
released x64 windows products). The spooler checks the driver name for a
match when the XP clients connect to the print server. The x86 print driver
names must match exactly or the XP clients will prompt for drivers. If the
XP machine already has the driver installed or the driver name matches the
drivers included in XP, then a connection can be created.

As far as printing goes, the data sent to the server from the XP machines is
in EMF format. The x64 spooler hands that to x64 GDI process to render the
data, then takes that data and sends to the printer.

When adding the x86 print drivers to x64 server read the dialogs when
    prompted for files.
