Migrate local user into domain

My apologies if this is the wrong thread for this question but it seems to be
the closest match.

Hopefully Someone can point me in the right direction with this..
I have set up SBS2003 for a medium sized law office. Each member of the
office has a client PC or laptop running Windows XP. They each use MS
outlook for mail, calendar etc.. Some also use Active Sync for PDA's and
such.
Just to be clear, none of these PC's have been part of a domain in the past.

I now want to add each PC to the domain such that the current local user
becomes a domain user. My expectation is that the current Outlook environment
can be moved into the domain.

My attempts thus far have yielded a new domain account being created on the
client with an entirely new environment. i.e. email, calendar etc all
initialized blank. This is true even when I use the same user name. I wind
up with 2 users, Phil (this machine) and Phil (domain) which are entirely
separate.

I've looked at the migration tool but I'm not sure it will help in that
case. The topics all seem to revolve around moving users from one domain to
another.

I also saw a similar thread here that mentioned copying the local user
profile to the new domain profile, but that does not seem to address
application data like Outlook or Active Sync.

Am I out of luck here? Does everyone have to start with a clean slate in
the domain?

Use the proper method to join the workgroup computers to the SBS domain (
htt:p:\\sbsserver\connectcomputer ) and make the proper selections for the
existing local user.

The method will properly convert the local user profile to the SBS domain
user profile.

1) Use the SBS wizards !!!

2) Post SBS questions to microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

I must have done something wrong then.
That is what I expected but in each case a new user was created on the WKSN
for the domain user. The new user of course did not have any of the settings
or email history of the local user of the same name.
Is there a simple step I missed maybe?
I have a test case, I can work with. Can I removed the domain user on WKSN
now and try setting up again, or am I stick where I am?

I have crossposted this to the SBS group if as well amd will try and follow
there.

When joining the domain, did you use /connectcomputer? And then select the
domain user you wanted to assign to the PC, and the local user profile to
use?

You can disjoin the domain and try again if you want.

I believe that would be the best action to take.

I'll read up more on selecting the local account when joining the the
domain. I must have missed that step or the new account would not have been
created on the client.

Everyone's been a great help here, I should have checked my plan with youse
guys before moving ahead!
