I am stuck and it appears I will have to re-install 2003 R2 Standard unless
I can get some help.
I did a repair of 2003 R2 as follows: Booted the 2003 R2 CD, let it find
the already installed 2003 R2 and told it to do a repair. The repair went
ok and about %75 thru I was asked to provide "install.exe" from the 2nd cd.
This did not exist and a google indicated this was a known problem and that
I should have uninstalled dot net 2 first. That would not have been
possible even if had read it before I started the repair. ie: I could not
boot.
I canceled and the install went a littler further and I was then asked for
iexplorer.exe. Since I didnt have that handy I skipped that. When the
system finally booted it was missing iexplorer and I installed FF (I did
have that handy) to be able to access the internet.
I downloaded an installed ie7 but was unable to get windows update to work.
Services.msc shows BITS not running and it wont start up as it says
something is missing. I started RPC up which was required by BITS, and
AFAICT all the dependencies are up and running.
I read where I could uninstall dotnet 2 and then do the repair. Another
suggestion I got from googleing was to unpack dotnet 2 and when the repair
asks for the install.exe, then supply the cd with the dotnet 2. I assume I
can find iexplorer.exe and do the same thing.
This seems such a kludge, is there anything cleaner I can do?
The problem came about when I cloned a small SCSI and migrated it to a large
IDE. It would constantly reboot, even in safe mode, so I attempted a repair
install.
TIA
