Access to Remote Desktop local server with external IP

I have a new Server 2008 R2 with Remote Desktop, User CAL's and SQL Server. Server is on domain and I set an internal staic IP to it and have my external IP available to use for the portal pieces, which need to be accessed outside of the district. We have a Sonicwall firewall, which I went through the steps of the public server wizard (provide public access to internal server) to open port 3389 and provided the external IP here. The wizard had me setup NAT policies, address objects and services.

I'm missing something, but I'm not sure what... Can someone help please? I'm assuming the Sonic Wall is setup correctly and I think I might be missing something on the server itself... When I ping using the external IP, the request times out.

I am not sure about your exact issue, but here is something which I did. What I was trying is to access my local server with external ip. For that my network admin created a DNAT rule on the external router. This was done with proper filter rules. After performing some kind of test I found that the same was accessible. I am not aware about the entire settings. There are also some SNAT based solutions that can help you more. You can google out for an detailed guide.
