    2003 server hangs after reboot

    Hi All,

We have a Windows 2003 server ( Model: HP Proliant DL385 ) running SQL Server 2000, in which we always experience issues. The issue is that Windows Server 2003 hangs after every reboot. Sometimes, it has also bluescreened and has created a memory dump. First time, when it bluescreened, the memory dump points to cpqteam.sys and the second time it pointed to afd.sys. On speaking to HP, they asked us to update the Proliant support pack and NCU, but that didn't helped for a longer period. The Server will come to normal after 8 successive reboots. The server also throws the event viewer with the following log such as Browser error, during hang.

Model is HP DL385 G2, OS: Windows 2003 server standard edition R2 SP2, PSP 8.10, MAD opteron 2.4Ghz prcoessor and 4GB RAM.

Troubleshooting done by us so far:

    1) Network teaming uninstalled and re-installed
    2) Network card drivers uninstalled and re-installed from device manager.
    3) HP PSP and NCU updated to new version
    4) HP has replaced the motherboard too , but of no use.

Hence, I am posting my issue to all fellow members and kindly request them to share their thoughts, If anyone would have experienced similar issue in the past.

NOTE: we have the DNS and WINS Settings pointing to correct DNS and WINS Servers.

    Regards,
    Ram

    Hello

-Did you run a hardware test (from hp if available) ? Especially on RAM &
    CPU ?

You may activate crashoncontrol, so you will have a memory dump while it's
    hanged.
To do so, add this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters
    name:CrashOnCtrlScroll
    Type: dword
    value: 1

After reboot, if you Hold down the right Control key then press the Scroll
Lock key twice, then a blue screen will be generated, and so a memory dump
with the state of the server.

by the way, the official KB about it:

Re: 2003 server hangs after reboot

If you get bluescreen, you definitely have hardware error.
You should insist that it is repaired.
If you can test without network teaming.

HP should keep replacing other components as well, not just motherboard.

Re: 2003 server hangs after reboot

Solution for the above issue. Servers kept under observation. Will udpate you about the status.

HP Proliant DL385 G2 servers intermittently goes out off the network and hangs at applying personal settings

Issue: HP Proliant DL385 G2 servers intermittently goes out off the network and hangs
    at applying personal settings.

    Reasons:

1: NIC card & teaming driver.

2: The TCP/IP Offload-enabled network adapter may consume lots of nonpaged pool memory. This may cause other problems in the operating system.

3: In some cases, the TCP/IP Offload-enabled network adapter may request large blocks of contiguous memory. This makes the computer stop responding when it tries to free the memory.

    Workarounds:

    1) Uninstall the NIC cards from device manager and re-install it again.
    2) Update the NIC card driver, NCU, Teaming driver and ILO.
    3) Dis-solve teaming and reteam the NIC.
    4) If nothing works, enable the server with single NIC.

Solution: Try the solution one by one. If solution 1 fixes the issue, do not try the other solutions.

Solution 1: Upgrade the tcpip and netbt drivers for Windows 2003 SP2 to their latest revision available in the following rollup package:

A Scalable Networking Pack (SNP) hotfix rollup package is available for Windows Server 2003 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950224/en-us

Solution 2: Disable the TCP Chimney offload feature from the following link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942861/en-us

Along with this get network card driver and firmware updated to latest as mentioned in following HP site:-
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...NameId=3288112 &prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=3219233&swLang=8&ta skId=135&swEnvOID=1005#12212

    Solution 3:
After you install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2003 Scalable Networking Pack (SNP) on a computer that has a TCP/IP Offload-enabled network adapter, you may experience many network-related problems.
The following issues may occur when Windows Server 2003 SNP is turned on:
a.You experience intermittent RPC communications failures.
    b. The server stops responding.
    c. The server runs low on nonpaged pool memory
This update turns off default SNP features.
