    How to disable Malicious Software Removal Tool ?

    I have a desktop running with Windows 2000. Yesterday night I ran Windows Update on the same that installed a Malicious Software Removal Tool. Later when I checked the system, I found that the toll is running continuously in the background and eating up huge resource. That’s not all, it is even killing very important running processes as well automatically and am not able to stop it.

    Is there any way we can disable it or make it run only when required? Somebody please help.

    Re: How to disable Malicious Software Removal Tool ?

    I have pretty good experience with Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool because I got it several times on my PC. As far as I know this tool gets installed once In a month, run quietly in the background and gets uninstalled automatically after few days. I have never seen it killing any process or such weird behavior.

    Anyway, you can get more detailed info about this Malicious Software Removal Tool here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

    Thanks a lot for the help friend, but its completely opposite in my case. It is really troubling me lot. It takes too long time to scan the system and wont even allow me to stop if I want. Is there any way to stop this scan by deleting any key in registry?

    Ok I managed to get rid of the problem. Here’s what I did. I checked the mrt.log where the following errors were listed:

    Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool v1.42, June 2008
    Started On Mon Jun 30 12:28:05 2008
    ->Scan ERROR: resource process://pid:1252 (code 0x00000057 (87))
    ->Scan ERROR: resource process://pid:1252 (code 0x0000054F (1359))
    ->Scan ERROR: resource process://pid:1368 (code 0x00000057 (87))
    ->Scan ERROR: resource process://pid:1368 (code 0x0000054F (1359))
    ->Scan ERROR: resource file://A:\ACTIVE~1\UNWISE.EXE (code 0x0000054F (1359))
    ->Scan ERROR: resource file://A:\ACTIVE~1\UNWISE.EXE A:\ACTIVE~1\INSTALL.LOG (code 0x0000054F (1359))

    I tried to search info about these error messages on internet and came to know that the error is related to a task-scheduler that have been set by a piece of softwrae called "Active Sync Recovery software". I just removed this software and deleted all scheduled backup. That’s it. Problem solved.
