| lost network connection after installing winxp service pack 1
need help asap. Installed winxp on my son's pc. everything was working fine-had internet and email through a network with linksys router and dsl modem. then installed service pack 1 and lost my network connection. It shows the connection and other computers on the network but cannot access internet, mail or shared folders. If I un-install service pack 1-it works fine again but then cannot run certain programs like itunes. Need help asap leaving soon for military deployment overseas and need to have fixed before I leave !! |

SPs are cumulative - SP2 was a very important one! Wait a while on SP3. If you haven't had even SP1 on there, you've clearly not been getting Windows Updates regularly, and the machine is badly out of date, which can be a major cause for concern. Enable automatic updates (and keep the firewall enabled) when you install SP2. That said, you could start by looking at the event logs, seeing whether you can still get an IP address via DHCP, ping something by IP, etc etc etc. Most service pack installs fail because there's something quite wrong on the machine - malware, often. I'd check the event logs, do full antivirus/antimalware scans, and so forth. It's really impossible to guess what's specifically wrong on this PC, but if a precocious child or adolescent has been around it for long, you can usually be quite sure there's something lurking on there that shouldn't be. Given your time constraints, you may be best off either backing up the data & doing a format/clean install (with SP2) or taking the PC to a trusted geek/shop where they can do this for you. |

Found it! http://groups.google.com/group/micro...5abd3dfe6a53f5 Please see my answer there. It should be similar to answers you will receive here. You may want to look into cross-posting in the future if you feel your message needs to be in more than one newsgroup to be properly answered/looked at. What you have done is called 'multi-posting', which is similar in that your message is placed in multiple newsgroups - but different in that they are actually two (or more) unique messages as opposed to when you cross-post. cross-posting would make things easier on you and better for those reading/responding and researching the same problem in the future. The long/short of it is... When you installed Windows XP onto your son's PC - did you also install all of the hardware drivers from each of the hardware manufacturer's support web pages for each individual piece of hardware? Also - why SP1 and not SP2 or - as of tomorrow - SP3? Service Packs are cumulative. Last question - added - are you sure you installed Windows XP and not vista? I only ask because you mentioned SP1 twice now. ;-) -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |
