Vista Windows Security Center

Cannot turn on Windows Security Center: "The Security Center service can't
be started". This problem followed a previous problem (still not resolved)
where I cannot turn on the firewall: "For your security, some settings are
controlled by group policy". I am not on a network and I am the
Administrator for the computer. My other family members do not have Admin
status. I have reasonably good protection with NOD32, Spybot and Windows
Defender, however NOD keeps detecting Trojans in servives.exe and config.exe
when I turn the computer on. I update all reccomended updates when available
for Windows and the virus protection. I can't seem to get on top of this
one. Can anyone help?

All the security software in the world can't protect the machine from the
user.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Re: Vista Windows Security Center

"Ultimately, the only protection against phishing, forged Web pages,
downloading malware, and other threats is the technology located between
the user's ears."

Mitch Wagner, Information Week
November 21, 2007

1- If you have anti-virus and anti-spyware programs already installed on
your computer, update the programs and scan your computer. With luck,
the programs will detect and remove the problem.

2- If the scan doesn't produce results, contact the program's technical
support. Most of the major anti-virus/spyware programs will help you
to remove an infection that their software did not detect.

3- Scan your system with /several/ of the better free online scanners,
such as (no order implied):

Kaspersky Antivirus (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)
NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/download/index.php) - free 30-day trial
Trend Micro Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com)
Panda ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan)
Sophos
(http://www.sophos.com/products/free-...ection-test.ht
ml)
McAfee Free Scan (http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp)
Symantec Security Check (http://security.symantec.com)
Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html)
GrisSoft AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/34/ww/crp/0)

4- HijackThis is a hijacker detector and remover, but expanded with a
lot of other checks against hijacker tricks. It is continually updated
to detect and remove new hijacks. You should always consult with
knowledgable folks before deleting anything. More information here:

http://www.whatthetech.com/hijackthis_v2/

You can post your HiJack This logs in several forums (NOT here), such as
this one:

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Hijack..._Removal_f27.h
tml

If none of the above remove the malware, it's time to show the computer
to a professional.

There may be nothing you can do to remove an infection, no matter what
you try. That's because some infections compromise your computer to the
point where you can no longer rely on what the operating system is
telling you. Rootkits are an example of this kind of infection. In that
case, your only way out is to erase your hard disk and reinstall
everything from scratch.

RE: Vista Windows Security Center

I am having the same problem. I do not have any virures, spyware or hackware
in my system. I did at one time, but since removed them all, using virious
programs.
I think that when the programs removed the bad files, that it may have
removed a corrupted file that was needed for the Security Center. I have th
enotice that it is not activated , I click to solve and it goes to the
center, I click on activate and it says that it can´t do this.
What can I ( or we as I am sure Paul and I are not the only ones with this
problem)do to restore the systems security center.
I tried using the orginal disk to repare the windows but nothing changed.
Other then reinstalling the whole thing, (would this make me have to
reinstall all my programs?) what can I do.
Thank you

RE: Vista Windows Security Center

Paul,
I just found the solution.
First remove all spyware, malice software...ect.
Then open or run "services.msc" from the run bar in Start.
Scroll down until you find the security center
It maybe disabled, if so double click on it to open the properties window
Then click on the Start type or something similar( my copy is in Spanish so
I am translating ) it should be in the middle of the first page.
change this to automoatic
Apply
and then you should be able to open the security center
You probably have not activated the antivirus software.
Do this and all should be good

I hope this works for you,
i got mine to work just fine now.
I had do something wrong when adding my Avast Antivirus software to the
security center.
Ciao
Robert
