Missing Security tab despite turning off Simple File Sharing

I don’t know what happened to my windows explorer, whenever I go to share any folder by right clicking and selecting Sharing and Security, am not able to see the “Security Tab” any more. It should there right?

I tried out many things to bring it back such as unchecking “Use simple file sharing” option from Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View but yet unsuccessful. I went through many KB articles describing the problem, tried everything mentioned there but yet no joy.

Can you guys provide me some working solution please?

First of all make sure that you are logged in as Administrator because if you have logged in with standard user account then you might not be having sufficient right to use that feature hence it might be invisible. And if you have logged in with Admin account and still it is not there then I doubt that service might be disabled due to some reason.

    • So go to Start > RUN > type services.msc > Enter.
    • Here locate and double click “Server Service”
    • Change it Startup type to ‘Automatic’
    • Click Ok and restart the system.

Hopefully you should now see the Security Tab. For more help, you can also check this discussion Windows 7 Security Tab

Re: Missing Security tab despite turning off Simple File Sharing Nothing helped

    Hello,

Just reviving this thread, because after lot's of googleing I still have the same problem as Leon: No Security Tab in the File Properties Dialog.

This thread seemed the most elaborative, giving many hints what could have been the reason, however it still didn't solve the problem:

    • I have Windows XP Professional (SP2)
    • Its a NTFS Filesystem
    • I have switched "Simple File Sharing" off
    • I'm logged in as an Administrator
    • I have checked the Server service (uninstalled and reinstalled it)
    • I have checked the group policy: Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer\Remove the Security tab was "not configured" (I have set it to deactivated)

Not much left to check ?

It's really odd, but what I found that helped me out in a bizarre case where Simple File Sharing was already turned off:
*Turn it back on (enable) Simple File Sharing
*Turn it back off (disable) Simple File Sharing

My head's still shaking that this was a bizarre fix! :)
