Go through these malware removal steps systematically: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware The round red icon may come from a program called Winfixer, Spyaxe, or Spyfalcon. There are instructions for removing that malware at the site above also. Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User |

Thanks for that. I did that and it said ok but I still get the same error message when trying to access the firewall settings and also the security center says it is not turned on. Any more suggestions? Thanks again. "Malke" wrote: > WayneB wrote: > > > Thanks Malke. I can give you more links for the firewall and Security Center, but since you didn't say what viruses you had there is really no way for me to know the state of your computer without looking at it. You can go to the links and try some of the fixes without hurting anything. Depending on what nasties your computer had, you may need a Repair or Clean Install. Note that I'm not saying this is definitely the case; just that there are limitations to how much can be done in newsgroups when reading/writing about a machine that was infected with one-doesn't-know-what. Depending on your inclination, you may want to have a professional take a look at the box. FIREWALL DEAD, or other network issues: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892350 To reset firewall: Start>Run cmd [enter] netsh winsock reset catalog [enter] Follow prompts and reboot. If you installed the Norton Security Center (and I think McAfee has one, too), it will disable the Windows Security Center. Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" These are the malware/virus's I found using Spybot. All the other programs did not find these and they were my problems that I had with the Security center and Firewall. Smitfraud-C. Avenue A, Inc. Windows Security Center.UpdateDisableNotify Windows Security Center.AntivirusDisableNotify Windows Security Center.AntivirusOveride Windows Security Center.FirewallOveride Windows Security Center,FirewallDisableNotify DSO Exploit Windows Security Center.Sp2Update Windows Media Player Hitbox You sir are a very valuable asset to this formum. I salute you. All my problems are fixed and my computer is back to normal. The services command that I ran did the trick. Thanks again. ~shakes your hand~ "Malke" wrote: > WayneB wrote: > > > Thanks for that. Since you had Smitfraud, you may want to run through the steps here, if you haven't already. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...itfraud_Trojan The DSO Exploit is an old false-positive of Spybot's and is nothing to worry about. Also see this link regarding Spybot's reporting of the Windows Security Center issues: Why does Spybot-S&D flag changes in the Windows SecurityCenter? - http://www.spybot.info/en/faq/46.html The other items (excluding Smitfraud) look like Most Recently Used entries and cookies and aren't worrying at all. I'm glad your computer is back to normal. Stay safe now. | Corrupt firewall registry could be the cause.
Download sharedaccess.reg http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/sharedaccess.reg (only for systems running Windows XP Service Pack 2) and save to Desktop. Then double-click the file to merge the contents to the registry. The Services entry will be created. Restart Windows (mandatory step, otherwise the following NETSH command will display an error message). After restarting Windows, execute the following command via Start, Run dialog: CMD /K NETSH FIREWALL RESET Launch firewall applet from Control Panel, and see if you're able to configure the Windows Firewall settings. If the above steps do not help, as a last resort solution (before attempting to reinstall Service Pack 2), give the following commands a try: Click Start, Run and type: rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf The above command repaired most of the Windows Firewall settings when I tested. After running the above command, restart Windows and then run the following: CMD /K NETSH FIREWALL RESET Attempt to start Firewall applet. Start the Windows Firewall service when prompted. |
