| services.exe' terminated unexpectedly with status code 128
Hello, could someone please help me with the following problem: Whenever I go to the internet, after about 5-7 minutes, I get the following message The system process 'C:\\WINNT\system32\services.exe' terminated unexpectedly with status code 128. The system will now shut down and restart. and the computer counts down from 60 seconds and restarts. I would like to note that if I just go to the internet for a very short time, and then log off, nothing happens. If I do not go to the internet, nothing happens. I am running Win2000 Pro. I had to reinstall recently and I think I am fairly up to date with security updates. I did not check since this started happening, since it would take longer than just a few minutes. I did run a full virus scan though (I have grisoft's free version AVG), I am up-to-date there, and did not find any virus. I tried the solution in Microsoft's KB # 318447, as well as 826955. I did not find anything out of the ordinary. I need help now as I really don't know what to do any more. Thank you for any input. |

If you are quite sure that your AVG is current and updated and you did your scan in Safe Mode, see this MS KB article (TinyUrl'd): http://tinyurl.com/7wxdm Please be sure your computer is also free of non-viral malware: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" You really need to make sure the machine is up-to-date on security patches. What you describe could be due to one of your network exposed services being probed with malicious packets. Now, W2k does not have a built-in firewall, so you probably should either spend some time becoming familiar with IPsec on W2k or get a third-party firewall loaded. Then, under the cloak of only allowing intended network traffic, visit the Microsoft Update site and get up-to-date. What Malke has suggested is also completely valid. It is possible that you have already picked up something that becomes active when it can speak on the world network. -- Roger Abell Microsoft MVP (Windows Security) MCSE (W2k3,W2k,Nt4) MCDBA "AL" <adil_l@worldnet.att.net> wrote in message news:_QjPe.671402$cg1.465344@bgtnsc04-news.ops.worldnet.att.net... > Hello, > > could someone please help me with the following problem: > > Whenever I go to the internet, after about 5-7 minutes, I get the following > message > > The system process 'C:\\WINNT\system32\services.exe' terminated unexpectedly > with status code 128. Thank you so much Roger, I followed Malke's instructions, and the sysclean found some worm somewhere and deleted it. I took the chance to get a firewall program installed, spyware programs installed and the system and virus completely up-to-date. Thank you so much Malke, I followed your instructions, and the sysclean found some worm somewhere and deleted it. I took the chance to get a firewall program installed, spyware programs installed and the system and virus completely up-to-date. I loved your page. It was very helpful. | Re: services.exe' terminated unexpectedly with status code 128
I am experiencing a problem with services.exe. I am running XP Home Edition and when Windows is starting an error window immediately appears titled services.exe application error. It takes two clicks of the OK button to close the window. Once closed, the screen goes to black with only a mouse curser. I have tried the safe mode and the same thing happens except the words safe appear on the black screen in the corners. On occasion Windows will open and I will get a users screen. However, response is extremely slow and some functions will not work, i.e. “search”. Even trying to reboot with Ctl-Alt-Del will not work. Other times Windows will hang up on the screen saver screen with no icons. Does anyone have any sugesstions? Thanks for your help, "Regine" wrote: > Thank you so much Roger, > I followed Malke's instructions, and the sysclean found some worm somewhere > and deleted it.
