Zone Alarm and root certificate

Zone Alarm version 6.5 dose not work since July 15 because a root certificate
cannot be validated (outdated ?). The solution proposed (upgrade to ZA
version 7 or 8) is impractical because thse vesroins do not work with Windows
2000 and I must use this OS for a dedicated software (that cannot be updated).

How do I get and install an updated root certificate that will be accpted by
ZoneAlarm vesrion 6.5 ?

I hate to point out the obvious, but this is a Microsoft Windows XP Security
related newsgroup. You are not only not asking about Windows XP (but
Windows 2000) but you are also asking about a third party product (Zone
Alarm) that is not supported by Microsoft.

So the question has to be asked, what doe Zone Alarm support say? Or is
that the "Update to 7 or 8" answer you mention?

I see all of these forum posts:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q....5+certificate

Specifically this one:
http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/...al&thread.id=9

As well as this KnowledgeBase entry:
http://server.iad.liveperson.net/hc/s-28464961/cmd/kbresource/kb-2030206509165238061/view_question!PAGETYPE?sq=validation&sf=101113&sg= 1&st=759383&documentid=366576&action=view"

Essentially - both state:
"As of 7/15/09 if your running any ZoneAlarm product version 6.5 or Below.

You may recieve the following error message:
"Validation failed for C:\Windows\system32\VSINIT.dll. You probably are
missing a necessary root certificate."

This could be followed by the same message but for vsdata.dll.

Solution:
ZoneAlarm 6.5 or below can no longer function.

Uninstall your version of ZoneAlarm and if you have a valid genuine
ZoneAlarm licnese key in good standing you will need to upgrade and download
version 8.0.400.020

Note: Windows ME, 98, 98se and Windows 2000 are not supported in version
8.0"

That sucks... but is ZoneLabs product to do with as they see fit.

More specific to you:
http://forums.zonealarm.com/zonelabs...ssage.id=20410

In the end - it looks like the product support for that is gone. Virtualize
the old OS that you *need* because of other poorly written hardware and/or
find another way to protect it. ;-)

Re: Zone Alarm and root certificate

Thank you for answering my question (which, really was, was " how I could get
and install an updated root certificate ?").

Let me briefly comment:

1. I knew this was the XP Security and Administration forum and that my
problem was with ZoneAlarm and Windows 2000. However, as I mentionned,
- the only solution proposed by ZA was to update their firewall but this was
simply not possible for me (I have to keep Windows 2000)
- the board on Windows 2000 is not very active
- what I was trying to find out was how I could update a root certificate,
and this is a very general question that weemed, for me, to fit in a
"Security and Administration Board"

2. Now, you wondered why I could not upgrade from Windows 2000 to Win XP and
you suggested "badly wtitten software". You are correct, but here is the
situation. The software is one that controls an instrument (technically, an
"High Pressure Liquid Chromatogarphy Equipment" and was wtitten (or at least
sold to us) by a reputable Company (Waters Inc, which specializes in this
type of scientific equipement). When the instrument and its softwaer was
delivered to us, we were told theyr made for Windows 2000 Professional
because this was the "best professional software" at this time and should
work fine (which it did). When WinXP came on the market, it turned out that
the programme was not compatible with this OS. Now, the company (Waters) has
come with a new Instrument and a new software that is compatible with WinXP,
but this means we have to uy a new equiment and a new software (they come
together) at a price of about 10,000 US dollars...
Since the instrument works fien with its "old" software and its "old" OS,
the obvious solution us to have this OS continue to work with ZA version 6.5
(this is enough as a protection as the computer is connected to our network
only for data exchange during limted times).

Of course, I could get rid of ZoneAlarm and install another firewall. I do
not like to do this for reason of uniformity with our other computers (which
all have ZoneAlarm as frewall and antivirus/antispyware).

Wher can I find information about root certificates ? I looked to various
places including Microsoft help and a few books on XP but did not find much
usfful explanations.
