why does my keyboard not work in safe mode?

I have the System Security Virus and was told my Microsoft to get into safe
mode and run some virus software from safe mode. However when I get into safe
mode my keyboard stops working. Any ideas why? It works when running normal
mode.

If it is a USB keyboard, make sure the BIOS is set for legacy USB devices.

Keyboard is PS2

Also, I just noticed my PS2 mouse is not working either while in safe mode,
but if I plug a USB wireless mouse into a USB port then that wireless mouse
works. I do not have a USB keyboard to try.

Re: why does my keyboard not work in safe mode?

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Re: why does my keyboard not work in safe mode?

I did not see the last post until after the fact.
I was able to do the following:
1. start the infected desktop PC, infected with "System Security", in safe
mode
2. Ran Microsoft and other security tools while in safe mode. They found a
couple of infected files / viruses / adware / etc but not the "System
Security" virus.
3. since my desktop PC keyboard did not work in safe mode I downloaded
Malware onto my laptop (not infected), then used a jump drive to load the
Malware onto the infected desktop PC
4. I ran Malware in safe mode on the infected desk top PC and it found an
additional 90 infected files. It got rid of the "System Security" infection.

Hopefully, you're referring to MalwareBYTES ANTI-MALWARE...

Re: why does my keyboard not work in safe mode?

Is it possible since you indicated that since the malicious file issue in
your system your keyboard didn’t work properly, you may want to uninstall
the keyboard drivers and reinstall it again, if am not mistaken your drivers
for may have been altered.

I've never heard of the "System Security Virus", but it might be that
the keyboard driver was infected or replaced by malware. While the
malware was running, it provided the necessary driver functions - "Safe
Mode" might not be loading the part of the malware that makes the
keyboard work.
