| Windows Defender on Vista
We have Vista and recently started receiving the error 0x80016ba stating windows defender failed to initialize. It says to restart computer or use the help and search function to start program manually. Neither options work. I have updated windows defender per Microsoft web site and even tried to install a new version and restarted the computer several times. No luck. We recently uploaded McAfee virus software, but I'd be shocked if defender and virus programs didn't support each other. Want to ensure computer is protected. Please help! |

Well, if the version of McAfee installed contains an anti-spyware component, then you're in for a shock. If that is the case, then Windows Defender is disabled by McAfee. Is this a McAfee version offered by your ISP, a full security suite, or just an antivirus program purchased from a retailer ? Vista can *not* be uninstalled in Vista as it's part of the OS. It can be disabled by a security suite when said suite includes an anti-spyware component. There is *no* way to install a later version of WD in Vista, either. Have you tried number 3 here ? - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931849 The first 2 steps are not applicable to Vista, so skip them.
