dcpromo

But if there are no other dc's in the domain/forest that you are attempting
to bring this up in, then you won't be able to do this.

You must have a least one DC in the domain or the domain is LOST
forever (unless you have a DC System State backup.)

IF you lose a doamin all domains below it in the forest are lost.

If you have a least on DC online and workding you just do DCPromo.
(You can simply type this at Start->Run or from a command prompt.)

Your Server must use ONLY the INTERNAL DNS which can resolve the
records of the domain, NIC->IP properties.

Let us know if you have a DC and have a problem.

Hi, can you explain what you mean? Is the 'additional domain controller'
already a domain controller? If so is it in the same domain as the
existing domain controller?

In an AD Domain with two domain controllers if one goes down the other
will automatically take over. If the one which went down holds roles
known as 'FSMO' roles it may be necessary, *if* the failed domain
controller is not going to be brought back, to seize the FSMO roles to
the surviving domain controller, but this should not be done lightly.

If the failed domain controller is a global catalog server then there
may be login and other problems.

Cheers,

Cliff

Re: howto promote additional domain controller to domain controller

to promote a DC you use the command DCPROMO...

when running DCPROMO you have several options like (or similar):
* New DC for new domain in new forest --> always available
* New DC for new domain in existing forest --> only available when the
existing forest is available
* New DC for existing domain in existing forest --> only available when the
existing domain in the existing forest is available

for this post I assume you have option 3. You can only install an additional
DC in an existing domain when an existing DC is available. Re-Creating the
domain with the same domain name does not work.
If you only had one DC and that DC died, your only option left is a backup
that was created recently. if you have no backup you have just lost your AD
domain.
If you do have a backup and I assume there are no other DC in the domain you
can follow the following steps:
* install windows with the same partitions and drives (using at the least
the sizes it had before)
* Restore the complete backup (assuming you AT LEAST have the system disk
and the system state)
--> the replicated set, mark it as primary

as soon as you have your domain up and running, install a second DC as soon
as possible with at least the DNS role and the GC role. Point both DCs do
themselves for DNS as primary and as secondary to the other DC
