adprep R2 issue to update w2k AD

Cheers,

I am planning to update our single domain Windows 2000 Active Directoy to
integrate a Windows 2003 DC (SP2 but not R2!).
Question:
Is it recommended to use the adprep R2 utility for the schema update (I
guess for the domain update I should use adprep from CD1!?) to be prepared
for later W3K3R2 DC's?
Or is it better to split it into 2 update tasks?

Thanks in advance

Re: adprep R2 issue to update w2k AD

Adprep ran from the first CD of the R2 set prepares the domain/forest for
Win 2k3.

Adprep ran from the second CD of the R2 set prepares the Win 2k3 domain for
the new R2 features.

You can wait and run adprep from the second CD of the R2 set when/if you
ever decide to use the new features of R2.

Re: adprep R2 issue to update w2k AD

Thanks Danny for your quick response.
2 more questions:
1st) Can these updates be done during the office times?
2nd) Does it make sense to stop replication between the DC's (e.g. just
disconnect the network cable)?

regards
Thomas

Yes it can. But as with most things computer related, there is a slight
chance that something will go wrong. Make a backup first. Doing this at off
hours would not be totally out of the question either.
As an FYI, I have only seen maybe 2 posts over the last few years about
adprep fouling up something. More posts about getting it to run, but only
about 2 or 3 posts about it completing and there were problems after it
competed.

Maybe cobble together a box, make it a DC in your domain with only the
schema master FSMO role. Take it off the network and adprep it, test, if
good put it back on the network, let it replicate, transfer the schema
master role back to another DC, run dcpromo and then remove it from the
domain. You haven't touched your DCs to do the test and if the test goes
belly up on the temp DC you don't have to worry about restoring from backup.
