"The instruction at "0x77fcaff8" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

I get this error message when I try to run a defrag (DfrgFat.exe) on a
Windows 2000 Professional SP4 machine with a single FAT32 partition.
This error is followed by "DfrgFat.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by windows." Sometimes it errors once with the 0x77fcaff8 error
and sometimes more than once. Occasionally the address is different.

The DrWtsn log file also mentions:

"Application exception occurred:
App: DfrgFat.exe (pid=1896)
When: 12/4/2006 @ 18:42:25.589
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)"

Any ideas? RAM maybe?

You might try reinstalling the application or ask them here.

Thanks for responding so quickly, Dave.

I don't own Diskeeper and don't plan to invest in it since this is an
office workstation and I know the boss won't green-light any third
party roll-outs unless it's absolutely vital that he do so.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I am looking at some open-source options
but I'm sure that won't solve the underlying problem of errors
generated by DfrgFat.exe as well as the MMC.

Thanks again!

Jack

The Microsoft Management Console has generated errors also (only twice
so far). This may be a systemic issue that will require a reinstall;
the thing is, the machine runs great otherwise.

Yes, sounds like you have other problems. Event Viewer may provide clues.
