| Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows
I'm using Windows 2000 with SP4. I managed to get some spyware installed in my computer. I think it was called "vcodec", a fake video codec. Using Spybot and Ad-Aware I managed to remove the spyware. Unfortunately now whenever a click on an .mp3, .avi or .mpg file within Explorer I get an error message saying "Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows", and Explorer then restarts. Just clicking on any of these files, either left or right click, is enough to cause this error. The Event Viewer shows the following: Event Type: Information Event Source: Winlogon Event Category: None Event ID: 1002 Date: 19/11/2006 Time: 6:39:27 p.m. User: N/A Computer: SHERLOCK Description: The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted. I can open these three file types directly from within Windows Media Player without any problems, just not from within Explorer. I suspect that my codecs may be damaged somehow. However I have been unable to find out which one. I assume that when you click on an .mp3, ..avi or .mpg Explorer searches for suitable codecs in order to show you the preview. This only happens when I have "Enable web content in folder" selected under "Folder options" within Explorer, which is when Explorer wants to show a preview of the file. I've used GSpot to get a list of all my installed video and audio codecs. For audio codecs it reports: ACM 0x0011 Microsoft IMA ADPCM CODEC Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> imaadp32.acm ACM 0x0002 Microsoft ADPCM CODEC Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> msadp32.acm ACM 0x0006 Microsoft CCITT G.711 A-Law and u-Law CODEC Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> msg711.acm ACM 0x0007 Microsoft CCITT G.711 A-Law and u-Law CODEC Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> msg711.acm ACM 0x0031 Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio CODEC Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> msgsm32.acm ACM 0x0022 DSP Group TrueSpeech(TM) Software CODEC DSP GROUP, INC. quartz.dll --> tssoft32.acm ACM 0x0070 Lernout & Hauspie CODECs Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> lhacm.acm ACM 0x0071 Lernout & Hauspie CODECs Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> lhacm.acm ACM 0x0072 Lernout & Hauspie CODECs Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> lhacm.acm ACM 0x0073 Lernout & Hauspie CODECs Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> lhacm.acm ACM 0x0042 Microsoft G.723.1 CODEC Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> msg723.acm ACM 0x0402 IndeoŽ Audio Software Ligos Corporation quartz.dll --> iac25_32.ax ACM 0x0160 Windows Media Audio Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> msaud32.acm ACM 0x0161 Windows Media Audio Microsoft Corporation quartz.dll --> msaud32.acm ACM 0x0130 Sipro Lab Telecom ACELP.net audio codec Sipro Lab Telecom Inc. quartz.dll --> sl_anet.acm ACM 0x0055 Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (advanced) Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen IIS quartz.dll --> l3codeca.acm ACM 0x0075 Voxware Audio CODECs Voxware, Inc. quartz.dll --> vct3216.acm ACM 0x0074 Voxware Audio CODECs Voxware, Inc. quartz.dll --> vct3216.acm ACM 0x0062 Voxware Audio CODECs Voxware, Inc. quartz.dll --> vct3216.acm ACM 0x0069 Voxware Audio CODECs Voxware, Inc. quartz.dll --> vct3216.acm ACM 0x0215 Ulead DV Audio CODEC quartz.dll ACM 0x0216 Ulead DV Audio CODEC quartz.dll ACM 0x3313 ffdshow Audio Decoder Copyright c 2002-2005 Milan Cutka quartz.dll --> ff_acm.acm DMO 0x0160 WMAudio Decoder DMO Microsoft Corporation qasf.dll --> wmadmod.dll DMO 0x000a WMSpeech Decoder DMO Microsoft Corporation qasf.dll --> wmspdmod.dll DSH 0x0001 ffdshow Audio Decoder Copyright Š 2002-2005 Milan Čutka ffdshow.ax DSH 0x0050 MPEG Audio Decoder quartz.dll DSH Voxware MetaSound Audio Decoder Voxware, Inc. voxmsdec.ax DSH Voxware MetaVoice Audio Decoder Voxware, Inc. voxmvdec.ax DSH 0x0055 MPEG Layer-3 Decoder Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen IIS l3codecx.ax DSH 0x0161 Windows Media Audio Decoder Microsoft Corporation msadds32.ax DSH 0x0130 ACELP.net Sipro Lab Audio Decoder Sipro Lab Telecom Inc. acelpdec.ax DSH 0x2000 CyberLink Audio Decoder CyberLink Corp. claud.ax DSH 0x0050 Nero Digital Audio Decoder Nero AG and its licensors NeAudio.ax DSH CyberLink Audio Effect CyberLink Corporation claudfx.ax None of the above have any error messages next to them. | Re: Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows
I don't believe Windows Explorer cares what codecs are used or going to be used based on extension file. Check to see what default application is used Windows Explorer to open these files. It may have been changed, since you can open them directly with Windows Media Player and they play fine. Also, in Windows Media Player, check to see what extensions it processes. I believe it's under Options | Files. There is a list for all extensions managed by Media player. | Re: Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows
Thanks for your reply. The default application for opening .mp3 files is set to Windows Media Player. The default application for opening .avi files is set to Zoom Player. The default application for opening .mpg files is set to Zoom Player. This is as I expected. In Windows Media Player, under Options -> Fiel Types, "MP3 audio file (mp3)" is ticked and "Movie file (mpg)" is unticked. This is as I expected as I use Zoom Player for viewing movies. Any other suggestions? Try this (I had this problem with Nero) 1. Open Regedit 2. Open key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\shell 3. See if you have a sub-key named open or play. If so, check what command (sub-key under open/play sub-keys), and see what is used to open/play. 4. Still same what you think it should be? Next, look at: 1. Open key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mp3file\shell\play\command and see what is set for play. Do the same for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\avifile\shell\play\command and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\movfile\shell\play\command On my system, I have no movfile\shell\play\command so I can't check. However I don't think this is the cause of my problem. Does anyone have any ideas as to what my problem may be? -- Posted via NewsDemon.com - Premium Uncensored Newsgroup Service ------->>>>>>http://www.NewsDemon.com<<<<<<------ Unlimited Access, Anonymous Accounts, Uncensored Broadband Access |

Yes, that does indeed prevent the problem from happening, but I quite like having the preview pane, especially for previewing images (it's not quite so useful for video). |

I managed to fix my problem by uninstalling Windows Media Player, restarting my PC, then downloading and installing Windows Media Player. Everything seems to be working ok now. Yay! |
