Disk I/O error: status 00001008

I'm trying to fix a friends computer and micros site is
generally no help. Nor can I find any acceptable help
through Google. The problem is that when they start their
computer,the Win 2k screen comes up as if it's loading.
Then the screen goes black with the following message:

Disk I/O error: status=00001008
<windows2000root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
windows 200 could not start. the file is missing or
corrupt. re-install a copy of the file.

pressing F2 or F8 does the obvious, but i can't boot in
any mode and can't access a prompt. it just goes back to
the same screen. Is there any fix for this?
