| Unable to transfer a Wiindows 2000 ghost image (PATA harddisk) to Dell Vostro 220 (SATA harddisk)
I bought this Dell Vostro 220 (using ICH10R Sata controller) in order to restore a ghost image of an existing non-Dell PC using Windows 2000. There are too many software inside Windows 2000 for which i have no installers, thats why i cannot afford to migrate to Windows XP. First, i tried to insert ghost image bootable CD to the Dell Vostro 220, but this obviously wouldn't work. Previously, I have successfully transferred the ghost image to SATA harddisk using a non-Dell desktop (usingICH6 SATA controller) whose motherboard supports both PATA and SATA harddisks. But when i take out the SATA harddisk from my desktop and attach to Dell PC, it is unable to boot up (normal because different hardware). I tried enabling the EnableBigLba setting in the registry and installed uniATA drivers using the non-Dell desktop before attaching the harddisk to the Dell PC, but the same error occurs while booting up. So the only way is to use Windows 2000 CD to repair to OS. This failed too because during loading of installation setup, the STOP 0x0000007B error message is displayed. I have tried to slipstream the SATA drivers (Intel Matrix Storage Manager 8.5) into Windows 2000 SP4 CD using nLite (i only use the service pack option), but during the setup loading screen, the message "The file iastor.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue" will be displayed. This Dell PC has no floppy disk drive. Even if i do get a floppy disk drive from Dell, I suspect the same message "The file iastor.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue" will appear when using floppy disk to load the same driver (Intel Matrix Storage Manager). Is there any other way to make this work using the Dell Vostro 220 Desktop? I do not want to buy a new clone PC whose motherboard has IDE connectors (which will probably work). As far as i know, all new Dell desktops do not have IDE connectors on their motherboards anymore. Please help me solve this problem. Thanks. |

I've never used the Intel controler but have used many others Are you sure that (a) you slipstreamed the correct driver or (b) that your slipstream process didnt go wrong? Theres no need to buy a Dell floppy, any usb connected floppy should do, in order to use the F6 option in the repair install of win2k You are, as I guess you know, going to have to install chipset & other mobo drivers during your repair installation. I just used a USB floppy to load the SATA drivers using the F6 option during Windows 2000 setup screen, but failed again due to the message below: "The file iastor.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue" Then i tried the same F6 option using a Windows XP SP3 installer, but it worked. Does this mean that Windows 2000 setup has a problem reading Intel ICH10R AHCI driver? Or Dell's ICH10R controller has a problem supporting Windows 2000? If it's the latter, then i am doomed. I don't know why this is happening, because Windows 2000 can load the ICH6 driver successfully in another desktop using the F6 option. Now, i'm quite sure the problem is not with the way i slipstream. Any suggestions or new drivers for me to download? |

Thank heavens. Changed the BIOS SATA mode setting from AHCI to IDE. Then Windows 2000 setup was able to detect harddisk (no errors) without any need for F6 option. Proceeded to repair Windows and now everything is running well. Cheers!!! |

Glad to see you were able to get this to work. Next week I have to do the same thing for a local dentist. They have an old clone running Windows 2000 Professional with a bunch of old software. I need to transfer to a new Dell PowerEdge T100. I was going to use my Windows Home Server to backup the Clone. Restore to the Dell. Then repair the Windows 2000 installation. Hopefully the Server 2003 Drivers will work with 2000. Any suggestions welcomed. |
