| Joining a Domain
I would like to know why when I join a Domain with a computer that a whole new user gets setup on that computer and I loose all the settings, favorites, history, loaded programs, etc? It's just very disturbing that all that gets tossed and a new user is setup. Is there anyway around that? Thank Wes |

You can, in fact, have a local user name called "Wes" and a domain name "Wes", each with his own profile folder etc. This flexibility comes at a price, which you are now forced to pay. There are, of course, ways around the problem. One is what I like to call the "Substitution Racket", the other relies on a registry hack. Read the thread titled "Lost Profile", posted in this newsgroup five days before your question. |

| Re: Joining a Domain
Hello additude, That's the difference between local accounts and domain accounts. There is a different authentication way. If you like to have the same username in the domain you can create it but it will create a new profile on the workstation now as you saw. What you can do is to logon to the computer with an admin account and copy the profile from the local user to the domain user profile. For only some users this an option for more see the link about USMT from Danny. | Re: Joining a Domain
On a newly-joined-to-the-domain PC if you logon to the pc first, then to the domain you would end up with two profiles. %username% and %username%.%userdomain% Else if you logon to the domain first, then to the pc you would end up with %username% and %username%.%computername% You can use the Copy To function to mirror the profile. Logon at least once after joining the domain. Then while logged on as another user (with administrative rights) Control Panel|System|Advanced|User Profiles|Settings, select your oldprofile, Copy To, Browse to %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\newprofile Change "Permitted to use:" to "newprofile" OK. OR--------------- Logon once to the new domain then run regedt32.exe and navigate to; HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList locate the new profile SID and edit the Reg_Expand_Sz 'ProfileImagePath' to point back to the old local profile. | Re: Joining a Domain
Thanks everyone, What a mess. This computer was previously connected to a different server on the same domain only the domain was previously a domain.com and the new server is a domain.local Before I was able to read these posts I managed to get to the drive via Knoppix and rename the user profile folders. ie wes.domain and wes.domain.000 I renamed wes.domain to wes.domain.zzz and wes.domain.000 to wes.domain and rebooted. Which was a screwup in itself because wes.domain needed to be wes.domain.000 and wes.domain.000 needed to be wes.domain.zzz. I was being distracted at the time by someone wanting me to go home and do some yard work before her family arrived for the holiday.... Apparently Windows did not like my changes because I ended up with a wes.domain that has the same appearance as the new user and the wes.domain.zzz is gone. Deleted I suppose and now all settings, email accounts, emails. contacts, etc. are history. Total mess. And MS provides no warning or no way to easily manage or migrate the "New User". I just had to re-build this computers hard drive from a crash a couple of weeks ago, but all the data I painstakengly compiled, passwords, software keys, etc. has been lost again. I don't think there is anything I can do now. |

It is something that network/domain administrators are taught - it's part of their training and experience. There are countless issues relating to Windows system maintenance that you are not specifically warned about. It's the same with a car: You can do your own maintenance but there are numerous traps known to an experienced car mechanic that will invariably trip up the novice. |

Yes, No Doubt. But I'm almost recovered now. Fortunately I was aloof enough to store my Outlook.pst data file on a separate drive and folder, so Importing it, relocating it again and making some registry edits recovered that. Reloaded some software including printers and stuff and I'm almost done with it. But your right, there are numerous pitfalls to watch out for....but I couldn't imagine tearing an engine down in a car then having the crankshaft just dissapear!! But I do understand your analogy. Thanks for the feedback and I appreciate being able to come to this forum and receive intelligent answers to my obviously novice questions :) Thanks and have a great holiday... |
