Gigabyte M912 Tablet Pc Touch Screen with Atom processor less than $ 500

Gigabyte had indicated it would soon not to join MSI, Asus, HP and others on the now highly competitive segment of ultraportables at low prices. This has now changed, with the presentation of the M912 at Computex, a machine equipped with a 8.9-inch screen and an Intel processor Atom, clocked at 1.6 GHz. To distinguish itself from its competitors, Gigabyte has chosen to rely on a touch screen, mounted on a pivoting hinge to make its machine a Tablet PC.

Around the Atom, mounted on an Intel chipset 945GSE there is a disk format 2.5-inch, whose capacity will vary from 80 to 320 GB. "We do not want to make DSS, insofar as the low storage capacity of the Eee PC we emerged as one of its main shortcomings," said one of the project. Also included in the machine two USB ports, a 1.3 megapixel camera and a port Express Card allowing the addition of a module 3G or Wimax. One memory is available for a maximum capacity of 2 GB. Equipped with a lithium-ion battery of 4400 mAh, the M912 would Gigabyte according to an autonomy of up to 4 hours.

The 8.9-inch screen offers a maximum resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels, which will, however, reserved the series M912S. The M912X for its part should be content with a display in 1024 x 600 pixels, enough to display most Web pages.

For now, Gigabyte moves up to a distribution of Ubuntu Linux, or Windows XP in its Home, as the operating system for the M912. The manufacturer does not refrain, however, propose Windows Vista, which would function properly in his view, despite the relatively limited performance of Intel processor Atom. However, he did not intend to implement the tablet PC edition of Windows XP, which seems perfectly suited to a machine of this type.

The basic version, equipped with Linux, a GB of RAM and a hard disk of 80 GB, is expected to be launched at least $ 500, provides Gigabyte. Prices should rise quickly, however, to reach or exceed $ 700, depending on configuration chosen. The manufacturer, however, seems not to be able to communicate accurately on the subject.

The M912 should initially be launched in Asia and in EMEA, with production volumes limited to a few tens of thousands of pieces per month. Gigabyte wishes probably allow time to assess the reception given to its machine before embarking on a reckless production or, why not consider new variations of the latter. Arrival scheduled for the month of July or early August, on the Old Continent.

How is it that the eee 900 with the same size screen, an SSD instead of a HDD, and the same 4400 battery can't possibly touch 4 hours and this one supposedly can?
