Microsoft Open Tech Announces Open-Source Kinect Project

Microsoft announced the release of a new open source project to facilitate the implementation of the functionality of its Kinect device for Windows.

For several years, Microsoft offers a development kit for the Kinect sensor. This allows it to introduce several interactions with the device directly in certain applications, for example by including the recognition of movements or voice commands. Initially reserved for software developed in C++, C# or Java, in its version 1.8 SDK is now compatible with web applications. Via its subsidiary dedicated to open source projects, Microsoft announced the release of "Kinect Common Bridge."

Presented at the summit of Visual Studio Evolution 2013, this container is grafted on the Kinect SDK for Windows and can easily take advantage of various features of Kinect directly within a development framework or software libraries. This project is published as open source and available on GitHub.

Microsoft adds Kinect Common Bridge that is already optimized for integration into the library Cinder and openFrameworks mainly used for creating advanced applications with many interactions as 3D animation graphic content.

The device developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to track the movements with incredible precision of a person behind the wall. The system name - "Kinect of the future" - is directly inspired by the camera motion detection of Xbox 360 from Microsoft.
