Tobii EyeMobile lets you control a Tablet with your Eyes
In partnership with Dell, the company Tobii specializes in eye tracking technology and has developed a tablet that can be used hands-free. A device for the disabled, which is due out at the end of the year.
Named Tobii EyeMobile, which is a collaboration between Tobii and Dell running Windows 8, it is a tablet that offers the user a hands-free navigation through a thorough eye tracking technology. The user needs only his eyes to surf the Internet, use applications or viewing content. The device includes a preinstalled application that runs in the background and monitors the user's gaze.
The EyeMobile was designed for people with disabilities who can not use their hands. There was a few years ago, Tobii has already released a powerful laptop in the field of eye-tracking, but it required the use of hands, and did not fully meet the criteria.
In practice, the tablet needs to be connected to a system with two following precise eye movements infrared cameras. It connects to the tablet via USB, and provides support at the same time. The site DigitalTrends, tested the system and recognized that it takes time to get used to the new navigation technique, which requires you to make quick glances in some areas of the screen to trigger commands. However, once you are habitual, the result is convincing.
Tobii plans to market a first model by the end of 2013, with the help of Dell, since it is the tablet Latitude 10 that was chosen to be equipped with the system. The price was not disclosed, but it could be quite high.
