Google Translate app 2.5 for Android reads Images from Text

Google Translate 2.5 version for Android can now get the translation of a text shot through any of the smartphone or tablet, as long as the Internet connection is active.

Google recently released version 2.5 of its Android application dedicated to the translation, called Google Translate. The main new feature is the ability to capture a piece of text using the device's camera and then get the translation of a single scan on the screen. Sixty languages are supported.

If the application is available on devices with at least Android 2.1, the function of image recognition is reserved for Android 2.3 and newer versions of the system. Recall that the principle had already been operated by Google itself in its application Google Goggles. It also inspired the Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo, which proposed an application for its Android Translation visual dedicated to restaurant.

The restriction in Google Translate remains, however: the dictionaries are not built into the application, and we cannot therefore obtain a translation if the phone or tablet is connected to the Internet.

This can only be achieved when the user selects the application icon with a camera and focus to the text, then select the finger at the fringe of the image containing the words that he wants to get translated, to be marked as if it were a pen. This allows to discriminate image detail that may confuse the translator. Once done, the application automatically converts the selected words in the desired language and keeps a copy of the image.
