Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook with Ubuntu to be shipped

Dell will be marketing a Linux XPS 13 to the general public, this fall.

The Texan manufacturer announced in May in a development project, to design a version of Ubuntu optimized for the XPS 13. This project was originally intended exclusively for Web developers and could materialize in the form of a distribution to install on a computer that comes with Windows.

Nnamdi Orakwue, executive sponsor of the incubation program that gave rise to the Sputnik project, said that this initiative "is a great example of innovation driven by employees and represents many new ideas."

The Dell XPS 13 ultrabook, which is now available with Windows preinstalled, will ship with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS equipped with hardware drivers and a basic set of tools to build, test and produce web and mobile applications.

Dell has sold computers with Ubuntu to the general public, from the month of May 2007. But three years later, it was again reserved for some Linux computers for businesses. The Dell XPS 13 with Ubuntu should be marketed this fall for an undisclosed price, the model with Windows 7 being sold from 900 euros.

The XPS 13 with Ubuntu 4.12 is currently for sale in the United States which is exactly equal to that provided with the Windows operating system preloaded, but its price is considerably lower than incorporating a distribution platform for free. For now, they have not revealed whether this output to the mass market will be provided at the same price or amend its final value.
