Rim delayed Blackberry 10 to 2013 and lays off 5000 jobs

RIM confirmed recently, taking drastic measures, to abolish 5,000 positions, and the postponement of Blackberry 10 in the first quarter 2013.

RIM, which was facing financial difficulties for several quarters, reported further losses on the occasion of the publication of the first quarter results for its fiscal 2013, ended June 2.

The Canadian announced the opportunity to detail the steps previously outlined by CEO, Thorsten Heins, to reduce by about one billion dollars of its operating expenses over the year by going through the elimination of 5,000 jobs in among 16,500 employees that currently work at the firm worldwide.

He at the same time officially shifted the launch of its future devices featuring BlackBerry operating system 10 in the first quarter of 2013. The first models were previously expected by the end of 2012. RIM still benefits from its financial reporting to highlight the excellent reception that would have, according to it, received for BlackBerry 10 within the developer community.

In the last quarter expired, RIM announced $2.8 billion in revenue which was down by 43% in a year. 59% of that revenue comes from devices itself, against 36% for service activities, and 5% for matters relating to the sale or license software. They have shipped 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones in the financial period, and 260,000 playbook tablets. Blackberry based installed devices today represent 78 million devices worldwide.

Losses mount for their $518 million in the quarter, compared with $695 million profit recorded a year earlier. "I am not satisfied with these results and I will continue to work aggressively with all parts of our organization, and the Board of Directors, to make significant changes that will help us meet the challenges of the moment" said Thorsten Heins in a statement.

The company has announced a CORE plan, which stands for Cost Efficiency and Resource Optimization, so that they can save up to U.S. $1000 million by the end of fiscal year 2013. The executive also said that they dont have plans to leave the physical QWERTY keyboard BlackBerry 10. Their intention will be to lead in that segment.
