Sony brings WiFi-enabled e-book reader PRS-T1 on the market

Sony's WiFi-enabled e-book reader PRS-T1 is now available. Resourceful hackers have meanwhile found out that the Android device can be modified so that it is possible to install apps. Sony has launched a new e-book reader on the market. The Wi-Fi Reader PRS-T1 is Sony's first e-book reader with wireless internet access. The Japanese company had the equipment presented at the IFA.

This unit is 17.3 x 11 inches tall -and about 9 millimeters thick and comes with the same size as the PRS-650 Pocket Edition, which will replace the PRS-T1. However, the new reader is lighter with a weight of 168 grams more than 50 grams. This is because Sony manufactures the housing is not made of aluminum, but plastic.

    Black and white screen

This is of 6 inches (15.24 centimeters) wide screen is from E Ink and uses the current Pearl technique. As usual with electronic paper, the screen is just black and white (16 grayscale) and cannot play videos. The resolution is 800 x 600 pixels. The screen is a touch screen via which the device is operated. It can also interpret multi-touch gestures, so that the user zoom with two fingers, the font of a text or an image can zoom into. The PRS-T1 also has five small keys below the screen, including two for scrolling. This is expected but remains largely unused because of the leaves by gesture works. However, there is the button to access the main menu and back button.

    Look up and surfing

Important innovation is that Sony has equipped the device with Wi-Fi. It is the first wireless-enabled e-book reader manufacturer. So far, this is having just a Sony e-book reader with 3G connectivity, the Reader Daily Edition. About the Settings menu, the user can connect the device to its Wi-Fi and then surfing via the built-in browser on the Internet with the known limitations: with the videos or flash animations, screen remains blank. In addition to that you can use the context menu from an e-book out an unknown word in Wikipedia or Google to look up. The company is building the device for an online shop. User’s books, newspapers and magazines will be able to buy online. They also get access to these services Google Books.
