ST-Ericsson born: A joint venture between STMicroelectronics and Ericsson

"The 50/50 joint venture that was formed as the Kingdom of the semiconductor division of STMicroelectronics wireless and mobile platforms division of Ericsson will move its first steps under the name ST-Ericsson"


The wireless semiconductor division of STMicroelectronics and the division of Ericsson Mobile Platforms have decided to unite their efforts and to create a 50/50 joint venture known as the ST-Ericsson. ST-Ericsson aims to become the top provider of platforms, and connectivity for mobile multimedia, including the reference design for GSM, EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA, and TD-SCDMA and LTE.


Multimedia processors and application of the new company supports all major operating systems and aim to be the engine of the next generation devices. Its connectivity options include Bluetooth and broadcasting, FM, GPS, WLAN, Near Field Communications and USB. The solutions of ST-Ericsson, in practice, covering all market segments, from basic level to smartphone and can be supplied either as Fully integrated solutions both as individual components.


Thanks to the company which was founded by ST-Ericsson has longstanding relationships with all major manufacturers of mobile phones, and is a supplier of Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and Sharp, as well as other industry leaders.

Established as a "fabless company" (a company without production facilities), ST-Ericsson will use the capability of processing silicon STMicroelectronics, as well as other third-party factories. He also has full access to the equipment assembly and testing managed by STMicroelectronics.

Good for them! are two companies with the know-how exaggerated, can only benefit from this joint venture!,and will allow ST to optimize the use of its production lines and testing, now quite exhausted (as to all its competitors in the rest)

It reminds me of the agreement for the creation of Sony Ericsson, with the only difference in this industry is that Ericsson will be quite new for this new things but this time it will survive strongly, unlike what happened at the time of the with Sony in the production of complete terminals.

No, there are several manufacturers of mobile phones which already supplied radio components of Ericsson of mobile accessories.
Among other things this year there will be even HTC, which will implement them in its own terminal based on Nvidia Tegra (usually because HTC is based on Qualcomm, which offers complete solutions).
